Hens and Chicks -- Stubborn little succulents!

This lens is all about hens and chicks and how these stubborn little succulents will grown just about anywhere, in an old coffee can, between rocks and even in a pair of discarded old boots. With little or no help these little rosettes will thrive in anything from an old boot to a rock garden, and propagate like crazy sending their little offspring to root nearby.

What are Hens and Chicks?

Hens and chicks (also known as Hen-and-chickens) is a common name for a group of small succulents belonging to the flowering plant family Crassulaceae, native to Europe and northern Africa. The 'hen' is the main plant, and the 'chicks' are the offspring, which start as tiny buds on the main plant and soon sprout their own roots, taking up residence close to the mother plant.

Purple Hens and Chicks

'Purple Beauty' forms rosettes about 3-4 inch wide with green leaves stunningly tipped in purple. Although each leaf rosette dies after flowering on these purple hens and chicks, there always seems to be an abundance of new offsets (the "chicks") to take its place. These fleshy, evergreen plants are content in average to poor soil as long as it is very well-drained and in full sun.

Prize-winning Hens and Chicks

Mrs. Samuel M.V. Hamilton was the first-place winner in the Newport Flower Show horticultural competition's "Whimsical Effect" category with her Hens and Chicks.

Hens and Chicks Housewarming Gift

Take a hanging "pocket" basket and fill the bottom half with moss. Add soil, being careful not to fill it up to the top of the basket. Tuck hens and chicks into the soil and add water. A great patio arrangement or housewarming gift!

Hens and Chicks Wreath

Make a wreath shape out of chicken wire and stuff it with green moss. Work soil into the moss, in and around, but not too tight. Add your Hens and Chicks, spacing them around the wreath and making sure the root ball is snuggled into the soil. Water more often that usual because they dry out fast.

Where Do You Plant Your Hens and Chicks?

I'm thinking I should get a couple of hens and chicks for my strawberry pot. There are two places where strawberry plants never seem to take. Succulents are so much fun to grow.

Very cool lens... when I saw the title I thought it would be a lens about raising chickens. I like the plants even better. I remember my mom growing these when I was a kid. Really well put together.

Love these Hens and chicks. Didn't know that is what they were called. Been growing them here and there because they are so easy to grow and maintain and they look cool too!
