Herb Planters

Ranked #22,186 in Home & Garden, #380,810 overall

Herb planters are almost as versatile and diverse as herbs themselves. They can be used indoors or outdoors, during the summer or winter, or for growing or only starting plants. They come in various sizes, so any number of different herbs can be grown together or they can be separated as needed. Herb planters can also be decorative, utilitarian, or what most people choose - both. So, ultimately it becomes less about the herb planters and more about the herbs themselves, just as it should be.

Herb Planters

A large number of containers used as herb planters can be found in stores and online, as well as garage sales. Many folks like to grow these plants so they may have access to many kinds of herbs for cooking and sachet-making. Some even help to keep away pesky things such as mosquitoes. Indoor or out, these fragrant and tasty plants become their 'green children', so to speak.

Often times, folks who can't wait to get a jump on the growing season, will take herb planters flats of soil indoors and toss seeds onto it, hoping for an early crop. When spring arrives and the ground warms, weather settles and the sun is shining, they pop the new plants into their herb planters outside and set them into the herb garden area set aside for this purpose. Some other seeds they can plant directly into the soil especially perennials.

Be sure the weather has no surprises like a late frost or you will be starting all over again, from the beginning seed sowing process. It's good to jump-start your herb garden, but be wary of surprises.

The growing pattern of certain herbs allows one to choose what part of the plant to harvest at any particular time. Sometimes you must wait for the flower, or even the seeds to be fully formed, and other times the leaves and stems are the important parts. Herbs, as are other garden items, are classified as annuals, perennials or biennials. Knowing the difference can mean success or failure when you are looking for a great harvest.

Finding a variety of 'found' items to recycle into the herb garden is very important to some gardeners. Making use of things that might ordinarily be tossed in the garbage heap, gives the 'green gardener' a feeling of importance, by helping to keep the earth happy and unencumbered by trash. Old buckets or cans, cement blocks with openings in them, can be partially buried in the soil and filled with herbal seedlings. This also helps to keep the roots from attacking the space of their next door neighbors.

When winter arrives and the ground freezes hard, that is the time to add mulch to your herb garden, to keep it from continually thawing and re-freezing throughout the season. This would toss your little plants up and out of the ground, effectively snuffing out their little lives. Using what you have around the yard, such as leaves, boughs of evergreens and straw materials, pile the material up about four inches or so to keep them snug. In the spring, your healthy and happy little friends will be anxious to pop up out of the ground and live again.

Teak is many times used as the building material for herb planters, and not only for herbs, but for other fancy flowers and so forth. Teak is a very hardy wood. They can be found in many places, especially specialty stores online. Also may be located cute little pots made of ceramics or plastics that are in the shape of animals.

Small bags filled with perfumed flowers, leaves or seeds can be tucked away in drawers and closets to lend their fragrances to your in-home decor. Also herb planters hanging from your patio like tomatoes often do, have become popular recently.
