Herbs! Sometimes Spices, Sometimes Flavorful. Food!

Ranked #13,883 in Home & Garden, #189,265 overall

You are Surrounded by Herbs--and You Might Be Surprised at Which Plants are Herbs!

When most folks think about "herbs", they probably think about small and aromatic plants such as basil, mint, lavender, oregano, chives, sage, and dill and so on--the flavorfull garnishes you add to a meal to make it even more delicious. But you might be surprised at what plants are considered to be herbs. For instance, bananas are considered herbs! (That was a shocker to me when I first learned about this in my biology classes.)

The Herbs Around Us!

Bananas in their bunches almost ready to be picked! When we think of herbs, we think of oregano, cinnamon, basil, lavender, ginger, chives, and other seemingly small spicy things we add to our foods for either subtle or extra flavor. But there are some herbs that grow to "giant" sizes. For instance, bananas are herbs. They don't grow on trees... even though a banana plant can get up to 15 feet high... the banana plant is an herb.

Most herbs are conveniently able to be grown in a small garden--even perhaps in a "window-box garden" or "window-sill garden" --and thus adding greenery to your environment--even inside your home. Of course, you can't do this with growing bananas, but chives, basil, dill, and parsley grow nicely in window-sill boxes.

Portulaca oleracea looks very familiar to me.. It seems everywhere in the Philippines. I remember stepping at those herbs/plants in our garden yard before. Terrific lens as always, Editor Dave. ~Blessed by a Squid Angel as well. :)

Interesting, I didn't pay attention to the fact that bananas are herbs, but now as you mention it, it seems obvious. Thumbs up.

You know, I've always been perplexed by Herb and herbs ... er ... erbs or herbs?
