The plus side to herbal cures

There are a number of herbs that can be used in herbal remedies to treat migraine headaches as well as the more common headache. Herbal remedies can prove to be a useful supplement to prescription medication and, can even be used to replace them. This can be a great benefit for those who may suffer some of the unpleasant side effects often associated with prescription medication.

What a sufferer may experience

The 5 stages of a migraine headache

There are five distinct stages to migraine, although not everyone experiences all the stages:
1. The Prodromal or pre-headache stage. During this stage, the sufferer may experience changes in mood, energy levels, behaviour, appetite and aches and pains, several hours or even days before an attack.
2. Migraine Aura. Approximately 10% to 20% of sufferers experience a migraine aura prior to the onset of a migraine. Typically, this includes flashes of light or blind spots, difficulty focusing and a zig zag effect in their vision range. The migraine aura stage can last for up to an hour.
3. Headache stage. The sufferer usually experiences a pulsating or throbbing pain to one side of the head, whereas a general headache will be experienced across the forehead. Mainly, the sufferer experiences nausea or vomiting, as well as extreme sensitivity to bright light and loud sounds. This stage lasts for four to 72 hours.
4. The Resolution stage. During this stage, the majority of attacks fade away. It has been known for the migraine headache to suddenly cease after the sufferer has been sick. Some people find that sleep can also affect a solution to the pain.
5. The Postdromal or recovery phase. Sufferers may experience exhaustion and weakness afterwards.

Some popular herbal cures for migrane headaches

there are no side effects with these.

Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo Biloba is a popular herbal remedy, with a proven affect on circulation. It is widely held that Ginkgo Biloba helps to reduce head pain from various headache forms including migraines.

Feverfew
Feverfew can be used to prevent and treat headaches and migraines. When taken at the first sign of a headache or migraine, it can reduce the severity of the pain and may also reduce the time the pain lasts for. Feverfew works by reducing the narrowing and inflammation of the blood vessels. It is also believed to be influential in the production of serotonin, a natural substance that occurs in the brain and is thought to have an effect in headache pain.

Cayenne
Yes, it's a spice but a number of spices can be useful for treating a number of ailments. It is believed that Cayenne is a stimulant and that it is this property that affects blood flow thereby reducing the effect of a migraine headache. Simply put 1/2 to one teaspoon of cayenne pepper in a glass of water and drink slowly.

Chamomile, Rosemary and Mint
These three herbs are very useful in bringing relief from migraine headaches. They are also used to bring relief from stress, anxiety and sleeplessness. Essentially, these have a calming effect, with chamomile being easily available as an herbal tea. If you get the warning signs of an impending migraine headache, a cup of herbal tea may be just the thing to ease the symptoms.

Margo_Arrowsmith says:

I always think that trying what has the least side effects first is the thing to do. THEN if that doesn't work, go on to harsher things.

I think that EFT should actually be tried even before herbal, which isn't without side effects, then herbal, then the heavy stuff.

I don't have the headaches, but know people who do. Always go with the least harmful first. I would even suggest trying something like EFT first, then herbal, leave the heavy stuff as a last measure, kind of like how war should be!

Lots of great information and very well done lens! ***** to you!
