People used spices, roots, and plants to make herbal teas and remedies for centuries. Many of those recipes had been passed down, others were lost. Natural teas made from ingredients you can pick up at your local store and combine to make your own tea are fun and great for your family.

Turmeric The Anti-Inflammatory Herb

Today many people suffer from inflammatory problems. There are many theories as to why this is the case, but inflammation can cause arthritis, sore joints, flu like symptoms, headaches and sinus pain. Many believe the inflammation is due to too many toxins in our bodies or poor diet. While there are many medications handed out to combat inflammation, there are also some natural remedies. For instance, turmeric and ginger are natural anti-inflammatories and coincidentally make a great tea.
In addition, turmeric helps the body by:


  • Detoxing your liver

  • Boosting your immunity

  • Purifying your blood

  • Improves circulation

  • Improves skin complexion

  • Protects liver

  • Reduces bad cholesterol

  • Stimulates secretion of bile that breaks down fat.


Turmeric and Ginger Tea

Yields 4 Cups
(Caution -do not drink too much turmeric if you are taking any medication that contains blood thinner)

Recipe
1/4 cup of grated turmeric root
2 tbsp grated fresh ginger root
4 cups water
1 lemon
1/4 cup of agave nectar or honey


Peel and grate turmeric and ginger root. Place grated roots in a soup pot and add the 4 cups of water. Bring mixture to a boil and then summer for 15-20 minutes. Strain the mixture into a clean glass container. Allow the mixture to cool for about 5 minutes.

Juice the lemon and pour into a turmeric tea along with the honey. Now you can drink your wonderful tea.

Nettle Tea for Allergies

Nettle is known as an old remedy for allergies and the treatment of allergies. The plant itself is an irritant on the skin therefore this is why it works homeopathically - small amounts helps reduce inflammation. You can buy nettle at your local health food store or cultivate it from the wild or in your garden. There are many ways to consume nettle tea - some add other ingredients for flavor.

Recipe
1 tbsp dried nettle leaves
1 cup of water
1 tbsp of honey

Bring one cup of water to boil. Place the dried leaves into a steeping ball, tea strainer or directly into a cup. Pour boiling water over the herbs.

Allow the nettle tea to steep for 15 to 20 minutes - the longer amount of time helps the nutrients release into the water.

If you poured water directly over the dried herbs then you will have to strain the mixture. If your water has cooled, reheat and add honey to drink.
