Children growing up in the Caribbean were always given worm medicine and purgatives. The worm medicines were strong bitters such as wormwood, Cinchona bark, quassia bark, aloe bitters to name a few. In my mother's family children were given a weekly washout to keep putrid matter, including undigested food, from festering throughout the digestive tract and colon. Often times when a child was sick they would get a cup of senna tea. They would then use the bathroom freely and in many cases get great quick relief from whatever ailed them. You may be familiar with dieter's tea which uses senna This method could often get rid of symptoms and have the child back to normal in a day, depending on the seriousness of the sickness. I have found that this can even work to relieve pronounced head and chest congestion including coughs. This herbal "washout" was generally administered as castor oil or a tea made from senna leaves and/or senna pods. This was generally given to them on a Sunday. In Guyana cups were made from potent Neem wood or casariya (quassia) wood. As my friend tells me, it was a small cup on the order of about 4 fl.oz.(~113ml). After much research I have found that bitters stimulate digestion from the stomach right through to the digestive tract. After which it is great to rid the body of slime and mucus that can build up most notably in the small and large intestines. The build up of plaque in the small intestines hinders the uptake of essential vitamins and minerals (the break down of ingested food for nourishment). The remnance of undigested food and stagnant fecal matter prevents proper elimination through the colon. Bitters also stimulate the liver and the liver's much smaller counterpart, the gall bladder, which is a gland which secretes bile directly into the duodenum after preliminary processing of food by the stomach organ. In taste and chemistry bitters are similar to bile or & contains precursors for bile production. When the liver is healthy the blood is also healthy. I have often heard bitters referred to as blood builders.
