Facts and Fact Sheets about Medicinal Herbs and Herbal Remedies

What Natural Remedies are in Your Medicine Cabinet?
If I were to visit your home, and open your medicine cabinet (with your permission, of course), would I find Pepto Bismal or Slippery Elm? Sleeping Pills or Valerian Root? Would your kitchen cabinet contain sugar or Stevia?
Over 25 years ago, during a time in my life when I was sick more than I was well, someone handed me a book about using medicinal herbs. That began an insatiable hunger to know more and more.
I met with someone well versed in medicinal herbs, and started taking what was suggested, with amazing and exciting results! After I was convinced that they worked and were safe, with great caution, I learned how to help my children through ear infections, upper respiratory infections, digestive disorders and more, all by using herbs and good nutrition. Their health improved tremendously, to the point that we went from monthly (or more during winter months) visits to the doctor to rarely needing to go to the doctor. Then friends became curious, and to make a long story short, I started to help others find health with herbs and nutrition.
Later, I became certified in Nutritional Counseling by American Health Sciences Natl. Inst. of Nutritional Education...you can find more information about the school and more about many things at my website, happynutritionist.com.
On this page you'll find both educational and fun things related to herbs.
Please don't forget to read through the fact sheet list and let me know if I can send you a fact sheet about any of the items listed....it's quite a long list. Each sheet is in PDF format. They are easy to attach to emails and safe to send.
Ask for my herbal fact sheets by sending an email to nutritionist[at]happynutritionist.com.

What Makes Herbs Medicinal?
There is an involved, scientific answer to this question, and a simple one. Let me see if I can give you an answer somewhere in the middle.
Like anything that is living, all plants contain a variety of chemicals, vitamins, and minerals. These chemicals can be good for you or bad for you. The general term used for any beneficial chemicals, vitamins and minerals found in plants is "phytonutrients".
When I first started using medicinal herbs, you had to search hard for any scientific validation for the nutritional and health benefits of herbs. Oh, science did use chemicals that were derived from plants, for example, the chemical the eases pain in Bayer Aspirin is derived from White Willow, and a chemical used in some pharmaceuticals for prostate problems is derived from Saw Palmetto. Digitalis contains chemicals derived from Foxglove (not an herb you want to be using medicinally). While pharmaceutical chemists will study a plant and then copy or synthesize the chemical that provides health benefits that they find in plants, those of us who are herbalists believe that the herbs work better in their natural form...just as God created them. We believe that, in most cases, the other components in the plant enhance the benefit of the chemical active that a pharmaceutical chemist would isolate and use to make one of their latest wonder drugs.
Over the years, more and more studies have been done validating the benefits...and at times the dangers...of some herbs. Personally, I'm still most comfortable with the things I've used for close to 23 years now, herbs that have a long standing history of safe use, and historical record of their health benefits. Plus, quite simply, I use them because they work.
Herbs are taken in the form of teas, extracts, and in their dried natural state. Essential Oils contain beneficial properties of herbs. Each form has it's advantages.

- do you have a listing of the benefits of individual herbs? For example rosemary. I grow herbs in my garden and love to use them in my recipes but have always been curious about their health benefits.

- I have an eBook I can send you that has health benefits of some single but mostly herbal combinations. I do so free for signing up for my newsletter at http://happynutritionist.com I don't send newsletters out all the time, so no spam worries.
ROSEMARY, mostly a culinary herb, does seem to have some benefits to the digestive system and there are at least a couple antioxidant properties in it. When cooking with some herbs, if cooked for long periods to extract the flavor, some of the good properties may be lost by the heat....
