Herbal Pillows for Sleep & Dreaming
Lavender has been extensively used in herbalism. An infusion of lavender is claimed to soothe and heal insect bites. Bunches of lavender are also said to ward off insects. If applied to the temples, lavender oil is said to soothe headaches. Lavender is frequently used as an aid to sleep: Seeds and flowers of the plant are added to pillows, and an infusion of three flowerheads added to a cup of boiling water are recommended as a soothing and relaxing bedtime drink.

Restful Sleep
In olden days, entire mattresses were composed of aromatic herbs both to induce a restful sleep as well as to repel pest which would otherwise feed on mattress materials.
How To Make Herbal Pillows
© Lauri Jean Crowe
* A cotton pillowslip, plain muslin or bleached cotton work best as herbs may stain and you can easily wash these.
* A fancier pillowslip which will cover the pillow decoratively, again should be easily washable.
* Loose herbs of your choice.
* Orris root powder as a binder.
* Essential oil of your choice .
Basically, you just want to take the herbal mixture you've chosen (I give one of my favorite recipes below) into the pillowslip and knot off the edge, or sew it if you want to be fancier. Then cover the plain pillowslip with the decorative cover and place the herbal pillow either next to your regular pillow or beneath it. Most people choose not to sleep directly on the herbal pillow, and some even place it beneath their blankets during the day so that when they turn back the bed at night the fragrant herbal aroma greets them and surrounds their slumber
One of my favorite herbal pillow mixtures can be made by combining the following ingredients
* 1 cup lavender flowers
* 1 cup white rose petals
* 1 cup hops
* 1 cup lemon balm
* 2 teaspoons orris root powder
* 2 drops oil of lavender

Dream Pillows Soothe Nightmares of War
Jim Long's Column
The caller went on to tell me that her group consisted of several men who had served in Vietnam in the 1960s. Her husband, she said, suffered from persistent nightmares from that war and seldom slept through the night without waking in terror. Mary had ordered a dream pillow, willing to try anything that might help her husband sleep, placed the tiny pillow in-side his pillowcase as they camped, and didn't tell him. Since the pillows are intentionally made to have a very subtle fragrance, he wasn't tipped off to its presence.
The first morning after the dream pillow was placed, she said he came to the campfire seeming very relaxed and mentioned that he'd slept through the night. After the second night, she said her husband said, "I've slept two nights in a row without nightmares.
More mornings followed without comment, then on the fifth day her husband said out loud that he'd been almost a week without a flashback nightmares.

Restful Sleep Pillow Recipe
Making Herbal Dream Pillows by Jim Long
My Restful Sleep Pillow recipe is good for soothing nightmares of all types, and it's fairly simple to make.Restful Sleep Pillow
1 tablespoon rose petals (any color as long as they 're fragrant and not chemically treated)
1 teaspoon mugwort
1 teaspoon marjoram
1 teaspoon hops (broken up a bit with your fingers)
Fabric
Thread
Fiberfill
Mix herbs together. Sew previously washed cloth to make a 5-by-5-inch pillow, into which you'll place some fiberfill, herb mixture and a bit more fiberfill, and sew the pillow closed. To use, simply place the pillow any-where inside your pillowcase - it doesn't matter where since most people move their heads around during sleep anyway.

Remember
1. Never use any oil, fragrance or essential oil in a dream blend - they make for a very unpredictable dream blend.
2 Always wash the cloth you make the pillow from, as the dye and sizing can cause headaches or nightmares.
3. Use the best, well-dried herbs and flowers (not ones that have been stor
