Native Healers of North America

Most Native families included at least one elder that had knowledge of medicinal plants. This knowledge was passed down through the generations and even to the explorers and pioneers that arrived. Since the clothing of Native Americans did not have pockets, the herbs and other medicinal ingredients were carried in pouches around their waist.

In the Iroquois tribe healers were organized into Medicine Societies that acted as "middle-men" between the spirit world and the sick. These societies had rites that included dance, chants, powders, herbs and "magic."

    yes, I am starting to incorporate some online ideas into the unit studies as well - the problem is that some sites become obsolete and then so does that activity!

    My son has used previous unit studies I have created, now he is homeschooling high school so these don't work for him. But, I have had other kids test them for me, and like them!
