How to grow and use fresh herbs by the Squidoo experts
One of my very first lenses was about my herb garden, and I've realised that there are lots of others on Squidoo who love their herb gardens as much as I do. To me it is very important to grow fresh herbs if you can, and this lens is full of fresh herb information.
My herb garden is right outside my back door, which opens out of my kitchen, so the first thing I see when I leave the house is my herb garden.
.
Every day I check to see how my herbs are growing. The last few winters have been a very challenging winters for herb growers in the Lake District National Park, in Cumbria, North West England, which is where I live.
In November 2009 the Lake District was flooded, with the highest ever rainfall in a single day ever recorded in the UK.
The last two winters have been unusually cold, with the temperature staying below freezing for weeks.
I've lost my rosemary and all but one sage bush. The bay tree which usually shrugs off the cold has been badly damaged.

My herb Garden in June 2009- looking quite happy.
I'll be coming back to add lots more fresh herb information, but meanwhile, if you have any questions, please leave them in the guest book- I'm happy to help with all you fresh herb information questions.
It costs very little to buy small pots of herb, but the rewards in cooking herbs, the beauty of the herb garden, and the possibilities of herbal remedies, make growing a herb garden a green living winner.
I've decided to try to write a lens on each of the fresh herbs in my herb garden. These herb lenses will tell you how to grow herbs, give you herb recipes and suggest herbal remedies ( at you own risk!)- lots of fresh herb information
Whilst doing this, I'm going to include my favorite herb growing lenses from other squidoo lensmasters. I hope you'll love all their ideas on planning herb gardens, indoor herb gardens, tips on growing herbs, cooking with herbs, herb recipes and herbal remedies.

Planning your herb garden
Helpful lenses for fresh herb information
My own #1 tip for planning your herb garden would be- make it as near to your kitchen as you can.

I'll cut some sorrel if I want a lemony herb for fish, or add the sorrel leaves to a salad.
Lovage is also great in a salad, or to give a celery flavor to meats or pasta.
The lovely fluffy white herb you can see in the photo is sweet cicely . This is used in fruit desserts , where it has the property of cutting sharpness so that you only need half the sugar. Great with rhubarb, gooseberries, cranberries and other fruits that need a lot of sweetening.
Here's my herb garden , and my kitchen door!
Often when cooking, I'll just pop outside with my scissors, cut a selection of herbs from my herb garden to sprinkle over the meal. If your herb garden is a long way from your kitchen, you might not use those wonderful fresh herbs as much.
I've also included a couple of my favorite lenses on kitchen gardens or vegetable gardens which fit in well with your herb garden planning.

Cooking with herbs
In my view, most recipes can be enhanced by the use of herbs
Herbs can be added to any vegetable soup recipes- some herbs go better with some vegetables than other. For example, carrot and coriander soup is much loved , and at White Moss House leek and lovage soup has long been a favorite.
On my own herb lenses you will find lots of herb recipes. Here are some from top Squidoo lensmasters.
