About herding!

This is me at my herding instinct test last March.

Herding dogs have long been important in livestock industries throughout the world.

Today there is also an increased interest in herding on the part of individuals who are not involved in the livestock industry, but who are interested in working with their dogs and helping preserve the talents and abilities of the herding breeds. Competitive herding trials have been increasing in number and variety.

Few activities offer the variety of situations and the opportunity for real teamwork between handler and dog that are a part of herding.

Herding dogs must cooperate with the handler, yet use their own initiative and judgment. They must be able to work with gentleness, yet show strength in facing up to a stubborn animal.

Thanks Herding on the Web, and Linda Rorem for this information!

Herding breeds!

This is my Aussie bud and agility pal, Berry, at her herding instinct test last Spring.

Herding dog breeds developed in response to different situations and needs. In many cases, the work required versatility, while in other cases there were particular conditions that led to some specialization. Conditions could change over time. The way they work provides a view of many of the tasks of stock-working dogs.

From Border Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs, Australian Cattle Dogs and Bearded Collies to Belgian Sheepdogs, Briards, Collies, German Shepherds, Puli's, Rottweilers and more - there are many breeds that herd a variety of stock.

Herding On The Web has a wide variety of links for all kinds of herding dogs! Check it out!

How dogs herd!

Dogs can herd other animals in a variety of ways.

Some breeds, such as the Australian Cattle Dog, typically nip at the animals' heels (for this reason they are called heelers). Others, notably the Border Collie, get in front of the animals and use what is called strong eye to stare down the animals; they are known as headers.

The Koolie has been observed to use both these methods and to jump on the backs of their charges. Koolies are therefore said to 'head', 'heel', and 'back'.

All herding behavior is modified predatory behavior.

Most herding breeds have physical characteristics that help them with their work, including speed and endurance. Shorter breeds, such as Welsh Corgis, were bred so that they would be out of the way when cattle, their primary charges, kicked at them.

Herding organizations!

Here are links to the most popular herding organizations that host events through the country:
American Herding Breed Association
The scope of the AHBA involves dogs of all herding breeds including rare breeds, as well as multi-purpose breeds which also have been used for herding, and herding breed mixes.

The AHBA Herding Trial Program allows dogs to demonstrate herding ability in herding trials at started, intermediate, and advanced levels on a standard course and on farm/ranch courses.

The testing program includes Herding Capability Tests, for dogs taking part in tests for herding instinct and beginning herding work, and Junior Herding Dog Tests, for dogs in early training, at a level preparatory to trial work.
American Kennel Club (AKC) Herding Program
The AKC herding program is for purebreed dogs and offers test, pre-trial and trial classes.

At the test (HT) and pre-trial (PT) levels, titles are earned with two passing runs. At the trial level, three qualifying scores under different judges must be earned for each of the three classes -- Started (HS), Intermediate (HI) and advanced (HX, for Herding Excellent).

A herding trial championship (HCh.) can be earned after completing the Herding Excellent title.
The United States Border Collie Handlers' Association, Inc.
The USBCHA is the sanctioning body for sheep and cattledog trials trials throughout the United States and Canada.

It was founded in 1979 and has grown into an organization of more than 500 members. Members who qualify at sanctioned Open trials during the year are eligible to compete in the USBCHA National Finals to determine the champion Open dog and handler for that year.

The trials sanctioned by the USBCHA follow the pattern of the trials of Great Britain's International Sheep Dog Society, the original registry for Border Collies.
The Australian Shepherd Club of American Trials Program
The purpose of the ASCA Stockdog Program is to preserve and promote the instinct of the Australian Shepherd to be a versatile stockdog, showcasing the natural working ability of the breed through the use of certification programs for challenging trialing disciplines on several classes of stock.

Divisions in ASCA sanctioned trials are offered for three levels of training on three classes of stock. The started division gives the dog and handler a place to begin and gain experience. Dogs must progress from started through open and then on to advanced on three classes of stock (cattle, sheep and ducks), earning two legs under two different judges at each level and on each class of stock, to earn a working trial championship.
