Hereford Cathedral Organ

Ranked #7,637 in Music, #208,493 overall

The Grade I Listed Hereford cathedral is located in western England dates from 1079 just after the Normal Conquest, making it one of England's oldest cathedrals.

Simlarly, Hereford Cathedral's main organ, the "Father Willis" organ is also one of the oldest cathedral organs with the works dating from 1892 (although refurbished many times). The case and front pipework are 30 years older.

Hereford's "Father Willis" Organ

The main present organ is called the "Father Willis" organ after the great Victoria master organ builder Henry Willis I who built the organ in 1892, replacing an earlier organ built by Gray & Davison in 1862-4. Henrry Willis retained the front pipework of the Gray and Davis organ and it's orginal case by Sir Gilbert Scott who also designed a screen for Hereford Cathedral (see photo below).

The organ has been refurbished several times, but the philosophy has been to remain true to the original Henry Willis sound. The most recent refurbishment was in 2005 and is described in a BBC News report.

Listen to Hereford Cathedral Organ

For many organs it's relatively easy to find an online recording/video; for Hereford it's suprisingly difficult with (at September 2009) absolutely nothing on YouTube. The best I can find - and it's far from great - is this low quality video.

If you want better quality then a CD is the way to go, and the choice is much wider! I've picked one out for you though which allows you to preview several tracks - which is a much better way to hear the sound of the main Hereford Cathedral organ than the MySpace video!

Hereford Cathedral Organs

The "Father Willis" is not the only organ in Hereford Cathedral. There is also a chamber organ by Tickell Organs. Perhaps the best refernence is the Organs and Organists of Hereford Cathedral by Watkins Shaw.
