Herend Porcelain Hungary
If you have read my other lens about the Monarch, by now it should be no secret for you that I love orange butterflies. Herend Fortuna porcelain is satisfying two needs of mine, (1) that of aesthetics, and (2) that of surrounding myself with orange butterflies. Although it is very expensive, even the small collector can afford a few pieces of this gorgeous, world-famous porcelain, hand-painted in the Herend factory of Hungary.
However, Herend porcelain comes in hundreds of different patterns, and the butterfly motif also appears in some other, not only the Fortuna pattern. Besides a brief historical review of the porcelain manufacturer Herend in Hungary, you will also gain a glimpse into the life of the very talented, friendly, and so often misunderstood Hungarian people.
Herend Fortuna Pattern Porcelain
Connecting with the orange butterfly theme discussed in my lens Monarch Butterfly, this time I will introduce a beautiful Hungarian porcelain made in the world-famous Herend porcelain factory, which is located close to the lake Balaton in Hungary (the largest sweet-water lake in Central Europe), also known as the Magyar Tenger = Hungarian Sea. The Fortuna pattern by Herend depicts rusty orange color flower bouquets and cheerful orange butterflies on thin and translucent fine white porcelain background. It is very difficult to run across a single piece for your existing set if you collect these items; and when you find them they usually are expensive. It is even more difficult to find a complete set of dishes.
Herend Porcelain Factory Hungary: Brief Historical Overview
The Herend porcelain factory started producing porcelain ware around 1844. At first, its purpose was to supply the replacement pieces for a Meissen china service owned by Count and Countess Esterhazy of Hungary (their expertly restored palace in Fertod, Western Hungary, is now one of Hungary's most inviting tourist attractions and museums of Fine Art). The porcelain made in Herend factory also included at first replicas of the Meissen (Germany) and Sevres (France) porcelain dishes. Later, however, a very unique, individual Herend designer line emerged that quickly became popular in Hungary and abroad alike. Many pieces and sets have been acquired by royal houses and rich collectors around the Globe.Throughout the stormy history of Hungary, through all wars, revolutions and societal upheavals, Herend managed to remain open and it continues to produce high quality items in refined, unique taste. After WWII, in 1948 when Hungary succumbed to communist oppression, the highly desired Herend porcelain dishes and figurines meant Western currency for this little but brave country. Shortly after the fall of the Eastern Block when Hungary regained its much desired political and economic freedom of open market economy, in 1992 the company was silently purchased by private ownership. Approximately 75% of the company's stock is today in the possession of its employees.
Herend porcelain ware is strictly hand painted in the traditional patterns today just like it has been for 160 years. There are tiny, albeit noticeable variations to the patterns, making each item a unique masterpiece of Art. Because of this personalized manner of production, some orders may take weeks or months to be filled; but they are well worth the waiting! Although a lot of sets (especially with the Fortuna pattern) were destroyed or taken from Hungary during WWII, the Herend porcelain factory claims to fill any special order for replacement purposes, as there are Artists who are able to reproduce even the oldest hand-painted patterns.
Herend Appolyi Pattern Dinnerware Rust Orange
Originally designed in the 19th century for the Hungarian Count Apponyi for his wedding, this aristocratic porcelain dinnerware is ever so popular today. It is important to note, there is another, very famous Apponyi pattern which consists of the most intricate green parsley leaves and richly decorated in 24 Karat Gold on white background. Also, the pieces I am introducing below are representing complete sets, I only chose one typical item from the set. If you are looking to replace or add on to your collection in a particular pattern, please review the link list below. Enjoy! Herend Chinese Bouquet Pattern Dinnerware

Who are the Magyars (Hungarians)?
A nation that has been known to its neighbors from being related to Attila the Hun and as a people of high temper, hot red Paprika, Goulasch, Zigeuner Musik (Gipsy Music), beautiful women and quick horsemen (i.e., the Hussars) only, Hungary has so much more to offer than this false tourist romantic! One of the myths, that Hungarians are related to the Gypsies, is definitely not true. Gypsies live in almost all Central European and West European countries, and the Hungarian people have nothing in common with them regarding their origin. May be, they just understood how to market the Gypsy romantic like no other people around them understand? Hmmm. Hungarians are only related to the Finnish people, their language is not even similar to any other but the Finnish. Both languages are in the so-called Finno-Ugric language group. It is, however, true that the Hungarian nation has been historically friendly with minorities. Due to its rich soil, very pleasant climate and hospitality, some gypsies settled there permanently. Hungarians appreciate their music, which is just as much an exoticum for them as it would be for the visiting tourist, and mostly enjoyed in restaurants. There is a lot of refined value embedded in the Hungarian culture that remains, even today, somewhat hidden to people from other cultures. This can be partly explained by the relative secludedness of the Hungarian language (there are about 11 million Hungarians living in Hungary, another approximately 4 million in other countries, the majority of them in Transylvania). Relying on (sometimes rather bad) translations of the cultural treasures of Hungarians, at best, helped deepen the biased and incorrect views about the Magyars. Those few who managed to defeat their prejudiced, misinformed and suspicious attitude towards Hungarians, and / or who learned to speak their language fluently, usually found them highly intelligent, kind and faithful in love and friendship alike; as well as generously giving, artistically talented and hard working, with a huge portion of intellectual humor! But, this must be the topic of another lens, at another time point. In Budapest, you'll find Fine Art Museums (yes, Degas, too!), Cafes, gorgeous historical buildings and luxury hotels, with some of the most beautiful views European capitols can offer. Good food, and music on a wide spectrum, from medieval to Liszt and to Gypsy serenade!

Herend and the Lake Balaton - Intertwined in Culture
I would like to emphasize the importance of culture and history when talking about a nation so very few people are intimately familiar with. This desire necessitates the emphasis on a variety of linked topics on my lenses. Talking about the Lake Balaton to the same time when talking about the Herend Porcelain Factory is an absolute must, as the type of themes depicted in this particular line of porcelain is so strongly related to the desire of capturing the magical natural beauty of the area! This involves riding, boating, swimming etc. Also, the number one selling product in terms of tourist souvenirs in Hungary is new Herend Porcelain. It is very expensive, and present only in Duty Free shops at airports, in luxury hotels, and one specialty store in Budapest, thus tourism is a big part of the entire picture here. Recently, one may find a handful of authorized Herend dealers on-line. Genuine, antique Herend porcelain, however, is very hard to find, and your best bet is probably to go to Hungary and seek out antiquities dealers. Lake Balaton en Espanol
