For the Love of Roses

I love roses.  I am not picky about the culitvar, the color or the size.  I am especially in love with fragrant roses, but even if they have no fragrance I will welcome them and probably take a picture!  Each rose seems to have a personality unique unto its self.  Even faded roses are still beautiful.

Through the ages, the rose has been a flower that signifies love.  In the Christian middle ages, the rose also became associated with devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.  One of her titles, Rosa Mystica, Mystical Rose, bespeaks this connection.

In this lense, I hope to gather many bits of information about rose traditions and rose lore along with links to photography and gardens on the web and in books.  As a photographer, I am interested in refining my rose portraits. As a crafts woman, I am interested in keeping the roses and using them, or the pictures I take to adorn other objects.   Welcome and please share my love of roses.

The rose illustrated does not exist in nature.  It started out pink and became purple through the wonders of digital manipulation.  (I love the computer as much as I love roses!)  I call it "no rose that nature knows", or because I did it for my niece, Jenny, who loves purple and roses, "Jenny's Purple Rose".  It is my copyrighted image. (Thanks for not reproducing it.)

Cecil Brunner Rose

Cecil Brunner is an old polyantha from the late 1800's. The flowers are a pale pink, fading to white as it opens. It is one of my favorite of favorite roses because the house I grew up in, which is the house I still am blessed to be living in, has a fifty plus year old Cecil Brunner in the backyard. For many years, it could not be pruned, so it happily went wild through my neighbor's orange tree and up high into the sky. I viewed it as my secret garden and looked at it from my office window. Last year it and I, were blessed by someone who undertook the pruning. This year the flowers will be lower to the ground, where they can be picked and brought inside. I hope the blooms will be larger and more fragrant now that it is not so wild.

This cultivar, also known as the "Sweetheart Rose" is available from Roses of Yesterday and Today. Once established it is sturdy and will take less care (at least in a mild climate), if mine is typical.

It is also available in a miniature form for patio or deck gardens.

Making and Using Potpourri
Twenty years ago I made potpourri and related crafts and sold them at local fairs. I never got beyond the 'I'm having so much fun, I don't know how much money I'm losing' phase, but I did learn a great deal about potpourri. It is decorative and the scents are calming and soothing. The crafts range f

Language of Flowers
A rose is a rose is supposedly a rose and according to Shakespeare would by any other name smell as sweet. Whether those suppositions are true or not, the rose has signified love in the language of flowers for a very long time. Similarly, the pansy has signified, 'thoughts of you' and friendship. Ou

Growing Rose Cuttings

I have been researching how to root rose cuttings, since I have two antique roses on my property that I dearly love. I found this wonderful web page, Old Garden Roses and Beyond, by Mel Hulsen at Paul Barden's website. It contains detailed instructions for propagating rose cuttings in plastic bags--complete with photographs showing roots! I am so excited. The link is above in the links section. Give it a try.
