Who is Hermann Hesse?

Back during the Sixties, German writer Hermann Hesse's mystical adventure novels experienced amazing popularity. The rock band now considered Psychedelic Rock classic "Steppenwolf" was named after the hero of Hesse's novel by the same name -- Harry Haller, him who smoked loose "long, thin yellow . . . immeasurably enlivening and delightful" cigarettes, drank magic elixirs and entered the Theater of the Mind a place of adventures in mind-expanding fantasy.

Movies have been made of two of Hesse's novels. On was the Seventies film Steppenwolfe with the lead character played by Max Von Snydow and the other Sidartha directed by avant garde filmmaker Conrad Rooks in the Sixties.

Hesse's last, and least understood, novel, Magister Ludi: The Glass Bead Game written in the middle of World War 2 in Switzerland won the Nobel Prize for Literature. His books have been translated into English and despite having been written in a different language are remarkably accessible.
