Matt Parkman is an LAPD cop.
His worst secret doesn't have anything to do with mind-reading. In fact, Matt doesn't start off the season knowing anything about mind-reading.
His big secret is that he is dyslexic! He's dissatisfied with his job and knows he would make a GREAT detective, but he keeps failing his detective exams because of his big secret! Actually, he's failed his exam 3 times before, so Matt is feeling none too good about himself at the beginning of the series.
He's a cop with some rough stuff on his plate. He figures his wife (and peers) think that he's a bit of a loser 'cos NOBODY fails the detectives exam 3 times in a row!
Well, Matt is nothing short of a Hero, and people had better watch out if they DO think of him as a loser, 'cos he will find OUT what they are thinking.
Matt first notices his ability when LAPD is looking for what they think is a serial killer named Sylar. Matt somehow knows where to go to find the last place that Sylar wreaked havoc on a small family - and Matt manages to get to the right place. LAPD manages to save a little girl...unfortunately, the way in which Matt leads LAPD to the girl also leads to Matt's arrest.
What the heck?
Other freaky things that happen to Matt:
* He and FBI Agent, Audrey, give chase to a man that Audrey ends up shooting. The man displays some telekinetic abilities, sends objects flying, and simply stands up after being shot - and disappears!
* Hears his wife, Janice's, thoughts...now wouldn't that be weird - to actually know your spouse's true thoughts? (Not all pleasant for Matt - not all bad, but not all good either)
* Hears the thoughts of a mysterious man from across a bar. Once Matt finally identifies who belongs to the thoughts he's hearing in the bar, Matt immediately collapses!
* Loses track of time...in a big way! He thinks he is waking up on the couch with a hangover, but his wife freaks out on him because he has been missing for a whole day.
Those are just a few of the weird things that happen with Matt Parkman in Season One.
