Binti Jua - Famous Gorilla Hero

Binti Jua is a Western Lowland Gorilla female in the Brookfield Zoo, in Brookfield, Illinois, outside of Chicago.
Binti Jua (whose name means "Daughter of Sunshine" in Swahili) is the niece of Koko, the world famous gorilla that knows and communicates using American Sign Language. Her mother's name is Lulu, originally from the Bronx Zoo, but now residing at the Columbus Zoo. Her father's name is Sunshine (from the San Francisco Zoo).
Binti is most well known for an incident which occurred on August 16, 1996. A three-year-old boy climbed the wall around her zoo enclosure and fell 6 m (20 feet) onto concrete below, rendering him unconscious. Binti walked to the boy's side while helpless spectators screamed, certain the gorilla would harm the child. Another larger female gorilla approached, and Binti growled.
Binti picked up the child, cradling him with her right arm as she did her own infant, and carried him 18 m (60 feet) to an access entrance, so that zoo personnel could retrieve him. Her 17-month-old baby, Koola, clutched her back throughout the incident. The boy spent four days in the hospital and recovered fully.(Wikipedia,2007)

Gorilla Saving A Kid

Binti Jua, is a female Western lowland gorilla. On August 16, 1996, a young boy fell into the gorilla exhibit of Tropic World, and Binti Jua carefully cradled the boy and brought him to her trainers. The incident received international attention, inspiring a lively debate as to whether Binti Jua's actions were the result of the training she received from her keepers (who had taught her to bring her own baby, Koola, to zoo curators for inspection) or some instinctive sense of animal altruism.

The rescue dogs of 911

"If these dogs only knew what a difference they make. Certainly, there's nothing that can replace the precision of a dog's nose-and absolutely nothing that can replace a dog's heart."

Cat saves family from carbon monoxide poisoning

NEW CASTLE, Ind. - A cat helped spare a family from death by carbon monoxide poisoning by jumping on the bed and meowing wildly as fumes filled the home, the owners said.
Eric and Cathy Keesling said their 14-year-old cat, Winnie, played a crucial role in saving their lives March 24 after a gasoline-powered water pump intheir basement caused the odorless but deadly gas to build up.
About 1 a.m., the domestic shorthair began nudging Cathy's ear and meowing loudly.
"It was a crazy meow, almost like she was screaming," said Cathy, who hesitated to get up until Winnie's caterwauling and jumping persisted.
When she finally climbed from bed, she realized she was nauseous and dizzy and couldn't awaken her husband. Because he had undergone minor neck surgery the previous day, she decided to call 911 but was so disoriented she had trouble dialing.
Paramedics found the couple's 14-year-old son, Michael, unconscious on the floor near his bedroom. The Keeslings were taken from the home in oxygen masks, treated for carbon monoxide poisoning and soon recovered.
Cathy Keesling said Winnie acted similarly last summer when tornadoes tore through the area, 45 miles east of Indianapolis.
"I really believe cats can sense these kind of things," she said. (NBC News Channel)

Oinking for help

LuLu the heroic pig now known worldwide

JoAnn offered to watch her daughters pet while she was out of town. The pet was Lulu, a wonderful potbellied pig. While home alone with Lulu, JoAnn had a major heart attack. She cried for help, but no one could hear her. Somehow Lulu sensed JoAnn's danger and ran out of the house through a small dog door. The pig laid down on the middle of the street in an attempt to stop traffic. She repeatedly tried to get someone to help. Lulu would return to the house to check on JoAnn, and then return to the street in search of assistance. A good samaritan someone stopped and followed Lulu to the door. A call was made to 911, and JoAnn was rushed to the hospital. Without Lulu's help, JoAnn might not be here today.

Did you know???

Pigs are thought to have intelligence beyond that of an average 3-year-old human child. They are smarter than dogs and every bit as friendly, loyal, and loving. When in their natural surroundings, they are social, playful, protective animals who bond with each other, make beds, relax in the sun, and cool off in the mud.

George Clooney had a 300lb. potbellied pig for 18 years before it passed away. Sometimes he even shared his bed with his pig.Clooney told the USA Today newspaper: "He was as old a pig as the vets had ever seen. I was really surprised when he went. I'm really upset, he's been a big part of my life."
