Ardeidae Family - Who are they?
The Great Blue Heron is one of twenty-two species of herons. The Snowy Egret (Egretta thula)- Found along much of the East Coast and elsewhere in the U.S., snowy egrets spend the winter from South Carolina southward. Their main foods are fish, crabs, amphibians, and insects. Bittern facts: When alarmed, bitterns imitate the reeds by sticking their head up straight and swaying in the wind. Their favourite food is eels.

What we don't understand is why these magnificent creatures stand staring intently and then fly off in apparent alarm when they must have seen thousands of narrowboats in their time. And why do they always fly in circles?
