The Snowy Egret (Egretta thula)- Found along much of the East Coast and elsewhere in the U.S., snowy egrets spend the winter from South Carolina southward. Their main foods are fish, crabs, amphibians, and insects. Bittern facts: When alarmed, bitterns imitate the reeds by sticking their head up straight and swaying in the wind. Interesting Quick Fact about the Ardeidae family

All members of the family Ardeidae have specialised feathers called powder down. These are never moulted but fray from the tip and grow continuously from the base. While pigeons have similar feathers all over their bodies, in herons, these are concentrated in patches. The fine powder that is generated as these feathers fray is used by the bird to remove slime and oil from their feathers.

Herons video

Herons on the Trent & Mersey Canal

Herons are quite like buses i.e. you don't see one all day and then three come at once. We saw these guys between the Croxton Aqueduct and Wincham Wharf. What we don't understand is why these magnificent creatures stand staring intently and then fly off in apparent alarm when they must have seen thousands of narrowboats in their time. And why do they always fly in circles?
