What a refreshing beverage from such a beautiful flower! Nice lens.
  • Edutopia Jan 26, 2012 @ 2:41 am | delete
Great lens! I didn't really know much specifically about Hibiscus tea but any tea that you make from scratch yourself instead of pre-made or from bags will always be much tastier. Will have to give Hibiscus a try.

Jamaica is one of my favourite beverages - cold in summer and hot tea in winter, it works both ways. Lots of Vitamin C, too, as you've mentioned. Good stuff all round.
  • Lindrus Jan 23, 2012 @ 10:42 am | delete
I really like the sour taste of hibiscus tea. Like your lens too.
  • miaponzo Jan 23, 2012 @ 3:45 am | delete
People drink hibiscus hot and cold in Kuwait and the Middle East as well! Blessed!
  • Othercat Jan 22, 2012 @ 11:44 pm | delete
I absolutely love hibiscus tea! I sweeten mine with a bit of cinnamon and honey and then add some orange rings and lemon rings. It's so refreshing and the health benefits are amazing. My mother-in-law has been drinking it daily for the last couple months and it's lowered her blood pressure enough so that her doctor stopped worrying.

something new I haven't read about, liked the different photos of before and after too.
  • extexanwannabe Jan 11, 2012 @ 5:58 pm | delete
I am curious to know how your hubby ferments pineapple. Being an avid homebrewer, i am curious. The tea of course, is excellent!
  • paperfacets Jan 11, 2012 @ 10:19 pm | delete
    Hi,
So, you want to get out of Texas? Oh yes, the pineapple drink. He puts about 3 cups chunks of pineapple in a gallon jar with a lid. Fill with water, add 2 1/2 cups brown sugar and about 1 cup beer. Cover. Let it set five or 7 days at room temperature. Start tasting to see if it is fermenting. You might Google Tepache to get additional tips. Thanks for stopping by.

It's called sorrel in Jamaica and I've had it before, a nice sweet flavor but still retains that floral taste.
  • TopToysForKids Dec 14, 2011 @ 1:30 pm | delete
Great lens, Jamaican sound good right now!
  • _Joan_ Dec 5, 2011 @ 5:55 am | delete
I'd never thought about trying to make my own Jamaica before. This is a super idea because at the places where I have bought it before, it usually has SO much sugar that I can hardly taste anything else.

    Thank you for sharing!
  • paperfacets Dec 6, 2011 @ 12:45 pm | delete
Yes, making it yourself is very easy. I like it more concentrated than most vendors offer and, yes, with less sugar. Latin markets sell it from bulk bins. I have thought to go to the produce market in LA, but it is a bit of a trip for me.

  • boutiqueshops May 16, 2011 @ 2:31 am | delete
wonderful! I just had some at a restaurant recently and it brought back nice memories of childhood trips "across" the Rio Grande from Laredo to Nuevo Laredo to shop. We always stopped for some 'aguas frescas' and this was a favorite. Thanks for the recipe ~ now I can make it myself!
  • jim-s Apr 14, 2011 @ 6:58 pm | delete
I drink it almost every day without knowing anything about it. It is delicious!
  • miaponzo Feb 7, 2011 @ 12:32 am | delete

I'm not a tea drinker, but this does sound refreshing. Maybe I would like it better than regular tea. I have the basic ingredient growing on my patio.

  • CCGAL Oct 11, 2010 @ 9:47 pm | delete
I have loved Hibiscus tea for years, but only ever bought it in tea bags ... this would certainly be a lot less expensive. I enjoyed the cultural education here - nicely done!
  • Jimmie Sep 21, 2010 @ 8:29 am | delete
It's beautiful with its red hue. I'd love to try it!
  • LadyLovelace Sep 19, 2010 @ 2:59 pm | delete
Well, now I'm even more annoyed that we just cut all the hibiscus in the front garden down. I guess I'll just have to wait until the ones out back start flowering...
  • LindaJM Aug 29, 2010 @ 1:47 pm | delete
Fascinating! Your lens is beautiful! I don't recall seeing any hibiscus in our town but I will be on the look-out now.
  • kohuether Aug 27, 2010 @ 1:48 am | delete
Damn! That's a lot of sugar! I love Hibiscus tea, though.
  • paperfacets Aug 27, 2010 @ 12:47 pm | delete
Haha Kohuether, koolaid takes one whole cup! Remember adjust to your liking and this is a whole pitcher. I like to taste a little sugar in my iced tea.

Agua de Jamaica is hibiscus tea sun soaked, boiled or infused. Add sugar and it has refreshing properties that almost beats the frosty beer.
