I thought the temperature of standard daylight was 5778 kelvin, the same temperature as the sun, and incandescent light bulbs are 2700 kelvin and not 2300 kelvin, which is more like the temperature of a high pressure sodium lamp. Isn't the daylight we are evolved to see in quite variable? When the sun is low in the sky the blue light is scattered and so the light we see has an effective temperature of less than 2500 kelvin. In dimmer light we are evolved to see in cooler light temperatures. So, unless your headlights are no dimmer than the sun your eyes are not evolved to see at such high temperatures. Anyway, why is it so much easier to read a book under the light of a light bulb than reading under a glaring sun?

It's safer because the color temperature mimics daylight? I'd like to see the logic behind that.

Yes, that is correct... As human beings, we are genetically designed to see the best in natural daylight. Therefore the color of natural daylight at its brightest point of 4100K to 4500K gives us the best visible light. It is in this color range that we see the details in objects most clearly, we are able to discern the true colors of objects, the contrast from light to dark objects is seen most vividly and our depth of field is at its best. Hopefully you can now understand the logic as to why the color tempurature of daylight is safer for drivers on the road at night. No other color offers us, as human beigns, the benefits of daylight to our eye sight. As a matter of fact, you will lost about 10% of all of the above in visibility for every 1000°K that you stray away from the color of natural daylight. Meaning that an 8000°K set of bulbs will offer roughly 40% less useful visible light output compared to a set of 4300°K bulbs.
