FInd Out More About HID Headlights

Whether you already have HID Headlights installed to your vehicle, or you've been planning to add some to help you see better at night, you may be wondering if HID Headlights are against the law or not. You may of done some research and have seen articles about people being pulled over and ticketed for having HID Lights installed to their vehicle.

If you look on a box of HID Headlights, you may see something that says "DOT Approved." DOT stands for Department of Transportation. If your bulbs claim to be DOT Approved, can you still get a ticket? DOT has never approved any aftermarket HID Headlights and really have no plans of approving them anytime soon. So if you get pulled over and show an Officer the box that says "DOT Approved" it probably won't get you out of a ticket.

Don't Get Pulled Over For HID Headlights

But how is it that HID Headlights are illegal, but Auto Manufacturers are now installing HID Lights to newer vehicles. It's actually the aftermarket HID lights that the Police are having problems with.

One tip to prevent you from being pulled over by the Police is not to install cheap versions of the HID Bulbs. If you're pulled over by the Police, there is a chance of getting into deeper trouble with cheap bulbs. Why? Because the fake HID Bulbs are usually Halogen Bulbs with a blue tint added to the lens. You could actually be ticketed for having "Emergency Colored" bulbs installed to your vehicle. Red and Blue bulbs are reserved for the Police and other emergency assistance. The way that the Police check to see if you bulbs are real or fake is they take a blank sheet of white paper and hold it to the light. If the light turns the paper blue, you have fake HID Headlights.

Another tip to prevent from being pulled over is to make sure that your bulbs are properly installed. If your bulbs are pointing upwards and blinding people, there's a chance that you will be pulled over.

Also if your bulbs are too bright and glaring off of objects, this causes the risk of blinding others. The Police have no problems with bulbs that are around 6000K-8000K. Installing anything brighter may bring attention to your vehicle by authorities.
