Hidalgo: a mustang invited by an Arabian Sheik to race across the Najd desert in 1891

Frank Hopkins, played by Viggo Mortensen, took his mustang horse, Hidalgo, to race against the best Arabian horses in the Najd desert. At least, that's the legend, and it made for a great movie released in 2004 by Buena Vista Pictures.

In the movie, Frank struggled along on his American Paint stallion, Hidalgo, against a group of swarthy Arabian horses accustomed to the hot, arid Najd desert south of Iraq. Through sand storms and heat, in the face of fierce, unrelenting opposition and danger, Frank strove not just to win the race, but to SURVIVE!

Nejd Desert

Controversy!

Was Hidalgo based on a true story?

...some don't believe the legend.

Frank Hopkins

Frank Hopkins really existed - that's a fact. But did he really race across Arabia in 1891 in a race called the Ocean of Fire? Well, that's questionable.

Even before the movie was released this was brought into question by Anuj Desai in his article, A Mirage in the Desert: Viggo Mortensen's Hidalgo is based on a not-so-true story. He stated, "But what shocks those who have looked into the Ocean of Fire in the Middle East is that the race itself didn't exist. Peter Harrigan, a journalist stationed in Saudi Arabia, saw an early Hidalgo script and began to wonder about the epic race. While writing a series of articles about it in the Arab News, Harrigan contacted Yemen's Ghalib Al-Quaiti, the last ruling Sultan of the area including Aden and an Oxford- and Cambridge-educated historian. His blunt conclusion about the race: "There is absolutely no record of any horse race in the past staged from Aden or from anywhere in that part of Arabia. Southern Arabia has never been known for its horses."

Should we care whether Frank Hopkins' memoir, written in the 1930s with his wife Gertrude's help, was accurate? Should we care if it was just an old cowboy's tall tale - perhaps something dreamed up while working on a southwest cattle ranch?

OR

Should we be questioning Frank's memoir and calling it nonsense? All this second-guessing - is it needed at all?

Fact or fiction?

...there's a lot of disagreement.

Take your best guess.

Hidalgo: fact or fiction - what do you think?

The movie was probably based on a true story, like the studio originally said.

srioschavez says:

well i dont think they would be jumping at the bit so to speak to admit that one of americas "mutt" horses or so they were thought of beat the best of there best.

Tom Stevenson says:

It could be fact with a little fiction, or maybe the other way around. But, whatever you think, HIDALGO makes for one great film & one of the best of its calibre to come along in a great while. Howard's score encompasses the film; its opening & closing themes most memorable. Now, to find the book

capriliz says:

I enjoyed the movie enough where I choose to believe that it very well could have happened. I am sure there are many things throughout history that have not been recorded.

LindaJM says:

It could have happened. The lack of written historical records does not mean that something never existed. On the other hand, who really knows? I'm not sure it matters. The movie was fantastic! The movie was written in good faith based on the stories left by Frank Hopkins in his book.

Hidalgo is pure fiction and should never have been billed as a true story.

Cultural Issues

Lakota and white

...lost between two cultures.

His mother was Lakota; his father was white. The Lakotas called him "Blue Child" or "Far Rider". Yet he feels responsible for the massacre at Wounded Knee.

Blue Child Frank Hopkins

That's the one. Hildalgo. The Jack Bull movie they say is true, but it is not true in Wyoming. I think producers fudge on "A True Story".
