How To Hide Your Valuables

Where Do You Hide Your Valuables?

If you've seen an episode of The Discovery Channel's, "It Takes A Thief," you'll know that a burglar will pull out all your drawers, flip over your mattress, and tear everything off of shelves to get to your belongings.

If you've been hiding your money under your mattress or in your underwear drawer--yeah, so does everyone else and thieves know it. These are NOT safe places to keep your valuables.

Places Burglers WILL Look For Your Hidden Valuables

Don't Hide Your Valuables Here!

  • the back of the closet in a box
  • the toilet bowl tank
  • around the toilet--boxes of tampons, toilet paper rolls, potpourri
  • cereal boxes
  • refrigerator & freezer
  • beds, pillows, between the mattresses, under the bed and inside anything close to the bed

Diversion Safes

Do you hide your valuables in a diversion safe?

I'll bet you already know that you can buy a soda can that's not really a soda can or a can of shaving cream that's not really shaving cream or an outlet that's not really an outlet.

I guarantee that most thieves know this too.

On the bright-side, they don't have a lot of time to go through every single can of soda or every can of shaving cream to see if it's the real deal. But they might. So these are all low-level safety. Probably good stuff if you have roommates or you live in a dorm. If you still live with mom and dad and want to hide your lawn mowing money from your siblings, this will absolutely work. Kids don't nearly have the experience as most adults so your average casual dorm thief will probably not know these tricks...unless they actually meant to steal your soda or your shaving cream.

Put your valuables in several layers of plastic baggies then hide things in hollowed out legs of patio furniture, or metal garden furniture legs, or even the hollow legs of a child's swingset, or fence post.

Ever since that scene in Casino with "Nicky Santoro" (Joe Pesci) pulling back the carpet in his closet and uncovering a floor safe--I've wanted one!

But keep in mind, a safe only works if no one else knows about it. Don't tell your buddies all about it the next time see them. You never know who THEY'LL tell.
The premise of, "In Cold Blood," comes to mind. The ex cons broke into the Clutter farmhouse because they were told about a safe with large amounts of cash. Truth be told, there was no safe and the entire family was murdered for nothing.
"I didn't want to harm the man. I thought he was a very nice gentleman. Soft spoken. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throat."

Keep your mouth closed and don't even ACT like you have secrets worth taking.

Permanent Fixtures Are For Homeowners, Not Tenants

Do not use this product if you do not own the home!

I see a lot of videos by college-age kiddies showing how easy it is to hide things from their roommate by cutting a square out the carpet in your closet or making holes in the wall. Real bad idea.

Legally, all permanent fixtures STAY with the property when you leave so you can't take these with you. Also cutting holes in the walls will easily lead to eviction (quit or cure notice) as you have just broken the lease.

Buy a jar of spices from the grocery store. Empty and clean the jar. Use a small paint brush to completely coat the inside of the jar with glue. Fill the jar with the dumped spices and allow to sit. When dry, empty out the excess spices. Spray the inside of the jar, spices and all, with a clear-coat spray to keep them in place. Allow to dry well.

"Hide Your Valuables," In The News!

Stashing cash in tampon boxes
"NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- As millions of Americans continue to lose their savings in the stock market, others are stashing their money where they know they won't lose it.
The magazine of a gun. A box of tampons. The belly of a teddy bear."

And remember, a thief already knows all these places. They tear the area around toilets apart because that's where THEY keep their drug stash. They expect you to keep yours there too and that's what they're after--drugs and valuables they can sell for drugs.

We just moved and this lens is very timely. Before reading this, my ideas for stashing valuables were very poor. You've exposed them all as being the first places a thief would look! Hmm.... I wonder how much I can stash in a wall fixture, and if any of the furniture is hollow. What I really want is a secret doorway to a secret room!

This is a wonderful Lens, let's just hope that nobody planning to break in to our homes reads it, they might learn a few handy tips!

I actually have my valuables stashed in places I didn't post, LOL! Given enough time and creativity, a thief could find them but criminals aren't smart and burglars want to be in and out quickly so I feel pretty confident.

My husbands uncle used to put money in the hollow chain link fence post. Several years ago, he ran into a cash bind and dug it up to empty it. He had several hundred dollars in it. If I had any valuables, I now know where I shouldn't put them. LOL~

I can't tell where I hide my valuables but sometimes I hide em well enough to where I can't find em. Wonderful lens. Gotta bookmark this for great ideas and I know it's on the bookmark tab.

This lens had me laughing out loud. Once I had 3 dogs and every house on the street was broken into but mine. No dogs anymore. You gave me some ideas. Loved the videos. I like that they are to-the-point and short. I don't have the patience I once had.
    Thanks for this lens.

Thieves know about the freezer, huh? Darn it anyway!! Guess I better find somewhere else for my good stuff.

    pretty sneaky ...

I had my home broken into 2 days before christmas - they stole the christmas toy stash for the kids. They took the TV off the wall, all the video game systems (3 - my husband is way into video games) and all the games, blue ray player and HD player and all movies and games that go to these systems. They dropped all the pictures (breaking some glass) looking for cash, they emptied the top dresser drawers and cabinet drawers, pulling them out and dumping them them, as well as the jewelry boxes (which had lovely walmart jewelry ... they didnt take it but they tossed it about ...) They also dumped over all the canisters in my kitchen and fed the dogs from my fridge ...

so if you use any of these places to hide your stuff ... know that the professionals will find it - they caught the guys in Feb and they had 42 homes that they could firmly pin on them with full confessions (with pics from the houses ...)

Made for a real crappy christmas ... so be wise and hide your stuff better than I did ... oh and get a security system - that is what I did too ...

(they said because I lived on busy road, with few to no visible neighbors, I was perfect break in location - so if this is you - be careful !)
