Cults and Autism
Ranked #6,595 in Parenting & Kids, #223,868 overall
Autism has many parents feeling desperate, leaving them and their kids vulnerable.
Please remember, the purpose of this lens is NOT to mock anyone's spiritual beliefs, but to serve as a word of caution to those who are in a vulnerable position to be sure that the religious or spiritual group that they are interested in is what it appears. I firmly believe that spirituality provides invaluable psychological benefits regardless of the denomination. You will find that this lens focuses on one broad group- that is only because this is where I have located potentially dangerous groups POSING as them, likely because this type of spirituality is more of a belief system than a structured organized religion- making it more difficult to determine legitimacy of the individual group.

Religion or Cult?
A hidden danger of desperation, use extreme caution if you have a child with ASD and are considering converting to another religion!
There are so many religions in our world. Please note that I respect all beliefs, however, there are small groups out there claiming to be religious and spiritual organizations who are just waiting to meet desperate parents- specifically those with Autistic kids.
I was trying to find some info on an Apocalyptic movie that I had wanted to rent. I have autocomplete in my search bar and accidentally wound up searching for autism 2012. Try it. I got curious about how there was anything relating to autism and 2012 (other than political plans and laws etc) and poked around for a while.
I found some spiritual sites that referred to Autistic children as being Indigo and Crystal children and Star Seeds. Some were very interesting, and preached peace and acceptance. Then a few pages back I came across one that was a bit different.... claiming to be of the same nature as those benign spiritual sites. They claim that people with ASD are extraterrestrials, descended from ancient aliens and here to serve as 'beacons' for the arrival of their species. I had read this else where, but this site actually went as far as to ask people to bring autistic children to the "camp' where they would together await the arrival of extra terrestrials (in 2012). They also strongly "encouraged" bringing any autistic person you know- even other people's kids, to increase your chances for being chosen for ascension. There was mention of worldly possessions no longer being necessary. "regular people" who do not understand will not be able to ascend, and they recommended seeking new, more enlightened friends. They had a tribute page to a famous suicide cult..... It was an attractive site, the intro to it was very appealing and well written. The intro text spoke directly to the desperation that so many parents of kids with ASD feel. When I tried to return to the site to submit the link (that I had saved) to the authorities I got the message that the page had been moved. I plan to continue searching and will report the new address to the appropriate authorities if I find it.
Use extreme caution with any group who demands that you give up contact with family or your property.
"Activating" and "Repairing" DNA
Several of these sites that embrace the belief of Star Seeds, Indigo Children and Crystal Children also offer "DNA Activation", some also offer "DNA Repair".
My understanding from reading through the info was that there is a belief that humans used to have and will in the future have 12 or more strands of DNA as opposed to the two we have right now. Many state that the Indigos have three or more strands at birth, and what the world sees as autism is a demonstration of that third strand.
Most of these types of sites do offer advice on meditation and finding inner peace, some as a means to activate DNA. Overall, they majority of them did seem to focus on health and well being as well as beliefs in higher powers and Karma. Some just took it too far. There was one site, where for ONLY $150 I could download a box to stare at. By staring at it for 30 minutes, I would activate an infinite number of strands of DNA, thereby having "powers". I tried their free one -I won't write about things I have not explored. All I got was a headache.
Among these sites there are also many who offer DNA repair. The one I described above, offered (for the same low price) a different box to repair the DNA which "erradicates disease so effectively that it cures ASD symptoms, Heart disease and even cancer".

So, what do you think......
Signs that you might be dealing with a Cult
Belief in Star Seeds, Indigo Children and Crystal Children does NOT mean a group is a cult...
Belief in Star Seeds, Indigo Children and Crystal Children does NOT mean a group is a cult. I reccommend using more caution with these groups simply because if you have not been surrounded by this culture, then it would be all too easy to become confused. How do you know which of these groups are focused solely on health, wellbeing, karma and higher power? What are the warning signs that maybe, the group you are dealing with is up to something?
Have you ever had contact with a group that you believe was a cult?
Books on how to get out of abusive relationships
Cult leaders are often charming, well spoken and persuasive, especially upon first impression.
DANGER
- They suggest that they can cure you remotely for a HUGE sum of money - rather than walking you through the process of self meditation. Then when it does not work, the sessions need to increase in frequency, until eventually, you must go in to see them for sessions. Then you find that all interactions are becoming more frequent with no results.
- They ask you to give away your money and or possessions, usually to them.
- They discourage contact with anyone who disagrees with their belief system or asks too many questions. They may demand that you cut off contact with family.
- They demand time alone with your child.
- The answers to questions you originally asked become more intense or extreme the longer you associate with them.
- Being told "once people join, they don't ever want to leave". There should always be some kind of turnover- if they have all stayed for so long, do they have a choice?
- Being told you must drink exactly what they offer prior to watching "training videos" or hearing a speaker- If it is a cult, there may be drugs in the drink that sedate, allowing for messages to more effectively reach the sub-concious... Brain washing.
- You are told to kidnap someone...You find a stock pile of weapons.... They ask you to hurt someone.... You witness physical abuse... Find a way out of the situation and contact the authorities immediately. There is NO maybe here.
- The end of the world or Ascension preparations..... Whether you believe in 2012 being the end or a time of Ascension or just some more dates, you should not allow someone else to push you into taking any actions. If the aliens are coming to get people, they do not need you to drink any potions or give away your house.
Please, Say something if you see it happening
Please, if you know a "desperate" parent of a child with ASD, remind them not to jump into anything. If they mention anything that you find to be unusual for them about spirituality and changes or "retreats" for indigo or crystal children, please please check out the organization and be sure that it is not one that could be "fake"/dangerous. There are some of the spiritual groups who view ASD as Crystal and Indigo children out there who truly seem to be spiritual and supportive without crossing or even approaching that line.... If you suspect that they are getting involved with a cult as opposed to a real spiritual group, check your government's websites for advice- In the US I recommend going to the FBI's site and reading their cult info.

- This is such good information to get out there. People like Jenny McCarthy have too much clout on this subject. I've actually been involved with new age groups and while most of the people involved are nice, there are some ideas that taken to extreme can cause harm as you've explained here. Great lens!

- You know what, I actually had a church-going woman say to me, 'You are going to have to spank that child.' I was stunned. NO, I will never 'hit' my little girl. I have been coerced by members of 'so-called' religious groups. Sorry to say this BUT (in my opinion) religion and cultural 'traditions' have been an EXCUSE to abuse children and women most often. I am sure men too (although I cannot cite examples, right now). The 'cloak of righteousness' has been SUCH an abuse of power . . . I would rather be known as a humanitarian than as a 'church-going person' any day (again ONLY my opinion). NOT meaning to offend here, I respect all religious doctrine EXCEPT for those which condone and promote abuse of others (more vulnerable in our society). GREAT lens, as always. Fondly, Rose

- Wow. Fascinating. I had no idea that autistic people were considered special in cult circles. Scary.

- Welcome to Squidoo and I'm sure you'll enjoy it here and find much love. The thing is, not to think of your child as different, but just to do your best. I'm a out of category here but am so impressed with your writing, so. Blessed by an Angel, albeit only a Squidoo one.
