When your PC connects to the Internet, your ISP automatically assigns an IP address

This address is used to keep track of your activities anywhere on the Internet. This is a Direct Internet Connection.

When you run Hide My IP, it instantly modifies your connection settings, and tells your PC to make designated connections through a fake IP Relay provided by Hide My IP.

If you tell Hide My IP you want to look as if you were in the UK, or Germany, for instance, your PC would instantly be assigned a British or German IP number, and that is how you would appear to the Internet.

This stops hackers cold, because they cannot trace the IP back to your home computer. If they can't find you, they can't steal your personal data; it's just that simple.

Email that arrives which appears to be from your bank, or PayPal, local department store or even your federal taxation office, is often aimed at getting you to reveal critical data about your identity. I downloaded the trial version and immediately put it to work. It is limited to using a single IP number, which was adequate for test purposes.

There was a speed bump during installation, when I discovered that I needed to install Microsoft's .Net, but it didn't take long to do that and get the Hide-My-IP installation behind me. It was pretty much a no-brainer and only took a few minutes.

When you run the program, the first thing you notice is your IP number displayed in large numbers at the top of the screen. Immediately beneath, you see:

Just below that is a button simply labled Hide IP.

When clicked, the software tells you it's searching for an alternate IP, which it produces within a matter of seconds. Your real IP is replaced by the redirect IP, and the message changes to:

IP Location: [National Flag] United Kingdom (GB)



After spending some time browsing the net, the only complaint that I had was that the proxy introduced a lot of drag on my system - things were much slower than they normally were.

At that point, I purchased the program ($29.95) and the Premium High-Speed Service. All in all, it came to just under $100, but WOW! With the Premium service, Hide-My-IP really rocks!

There is virtually no change in online response. Websites load with lightning speed, scripts run with incredible speed, and the software operates unnoticed in the background.

The program has all sorts of neat options, like the ability to automatically change your IP number at interludes of one minute or more, automatically launch on startup, determine whether you wish to use randomly selected IPs, or specify the United States, UK, Canada or Germany.

If you want to, you can use a single click to force the program to always use the same IP address.

The Premium service lets you select specific programs which would trigger a false IP number. The list includes oodles of online gaming sites, most popular email clients, telnet and a wide variety of Instant Messengers.

You can even tell the program to work for one browswer but not for others. That is, you can tell it to work when Opera runs, but not Internet Explorer, or the other way around... or, of course, you can have it work for all of your browsers.

Finally, you can exclude any IP numbers you do not want to use.

This is a superb piece of software, and it fills a very real need that everyone has to protect themselves against hackers and identity theft.

On a perhaps trivial level, I found this software useful for pulling in some of the streaming audio programs which are restricted to American listeners, the most memorable of which is the Rush Limbaugh Show. Thanks to Hide-My-IP, I can finally listen to Rush while working at my desk.
