HID Proximity Cards for High Level of Security within an Organization

Ranked #21,690 in Computers & Electronics, #416,189 overall

Worried about security issues in your company? Then it is time for you to have HID proximity cards for your company ID cards.

What are they?

HID proximity cards are contactless cards that has a 125 kHz RFID technology which can seamlessly be integrated into the access control system within a company. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification, which is a small electronic device comprising of a small chip capable of carrying up to 2,000 bytes of data and an antenna. It is used in lieu of the barcodes or the magnetic strip at the back of the ATM card or a credit card. It actually works better than barcodes.

How does it work?

It is one of the important components of the company access control system which acts as the organization's security officer by identifying the card holder and whether that holder is authorized to access certain physical facilities owned by the company.

It has embedded in it information in binary form with the composition and sequence of the binary numbers unique to the card holder, which allows the holder to access certain facilities of the company. It also is used to access certain files in the company's information system instead of using passwords as was done before.

The Mechanism

Such embedded information is captured by the card reader, which is also part of the access control system in the HID proximity card. This information is converted to a readable format and then transmitted to the access controller for review and immediate response.

The access controller then evaluates the data transmitted to it from the card and the exact match in the database is sought. If controller finds a match, access is given and the control hardware, for example in a door, is released and the door is unlocked. If no match is found, then access is denied.

The access controller is run by the software for the purpose which provides features such as restrictions and granting access privileges in certain places at certain times, and withholding authorization as necessary. Even the configuration for the doors and other security devices can be set or modified so that appropriate responses by the controller can be made.

How are they made?

The HID cards can be made using the direct image or thermal transfer Fargo printer. By the way, a thermal transfer printer is one that uses heat to put the impression on the card through a print head that contains many small resistive heating pins that melt wax -based ink from a coated ribbon to the card or burn dots on special coated film that stay glued to the surface of the card or film.
On the other hand, in direct thermal printing there is no ribbon used but the dots are burned to the card surface or film as the material passes over the heated print head. This process is similar to the one used in early models of facsimile machines.
These cards are produced using capable printers, of which the appropriate Fargo printer is one.

Conclusion

HID proximity cards some of the most important components of a high level security system in a company. Properly made and utilized, the security system will work efficiently to forestall whatever malicious designs an unseen enemy might cook up.
