Western Romance Review
of High Lonesome
Typically I like to read a good mystery and have a tendency to pass on the romance genre of fiction. It isn't that I am against romance, it is more that they all seem to be sort of the same plot told in a few different ways. Stacey Coverstone has changed my mind with her book High Lonesome. She has created a delightful story of romance along with a little suspense and mystery thrown in for added flavor. The owner of a ranch in New Mexico, Scott Landry, finds a woman along the side of the road who looks as though she has been attacked. From the moment he sets eyes on this dark haired beauty, he knows that his life is about to change and he doesn't know how he feels about that. The woman is a mystery as she is suffering from amnesia and can not remember the attack, who attacked her, or her name for that matter.
Coverstone weaves us through the daily life at the ranch and introduces us to a most enjoyable set of characters that enhance the plot. Landry's young daughter Willow is quite an amusing and precocious child. His girlfriend is one that we as readers know is all wrong for him. The Cook and Housekeeper gives just enough of a motherly feel in her character. There are other great characters but I don't want to give too much of the plot away.
Obviously in a romance we are going to watch a couple fall in love and we are not disappointed in High Lonesome. I do like how Coverstone gave some authenticity to the romance that develops between Scott and "Beth" (as they begin to call her). It is believable and has its ups and downs as any romance does. I also like the slow process of "Beth" having the flashbacks and beginning to recall bits and pieces of a life that she can't quite put together.
The setting taking place in New Mexico on a ranch really does add to the plot. Coverstone does a remarkable job with her description of the surrounding area and the ranch itself. As a reader, you really do feel like you are there.
The ending had some nice twists and turns along with a surprise or two which made this book a real enjoyable reading experience. I highly recommend it!

She Has Become Known As Beth:
Little Willow gave her the name Beth since she couldn't remember her real name. When she learns the truth and goes back to her real life she can't help but wonder if she will ever feel as safe as she did at the High Lonesome Guest Ranch.
