Factors That Affect Actual Internet Speed
Do you know what causes cable or DSL Internet to be fast or slow. Below are some factors that can affect the speed of your high-speed Internet connection.
- The same cable line connects to many households, so bandwidth can fluctuate depending on how many users are online simultaneously.
- DSL speeds vary depending on your distance from the central office. The closer you are the better.
- Package price is your best bet for determining speed. The faster DSL and Cable Internet packages usually range from $40-$50.
- Most DSL and cable Internet servicesare asymmetrical, meaning that downloading and uploading speeds are different. Basically, activities such as receiving emails and browsing Web sites are generally faster than sending emails and uploading files.
- Most companies will provide a range of download and upload speeds specifically detailing a max bandwidth.
How to Keep Your Children Safe on the Internet

- Monitoring Computer Use — Monitor what your child does on the computer and don't just turn a blind eye.
- Monitoring Softeware — Install or see if your high-speed Internet company offers monitory software that will allow you to see what your child is looking at on the net and will permit you to block certain content.
- Family Room Computer — Don't let your child have a computer in their bedroom. Instead have the computer in a family room where you can supervise their online usage.

Life is Full of Choices
The difference between a high-speed and dial-up connection
Dial-Up
A dial-up connection allows you to access the Internet through a phone line and the analog modem in your computer. Keep in mind that since you are using a phone line that you will not be able to talk on the phone while you are connected to the Internet. Sending information using dial-up is limited by the bandwidth of the phone line, making it a slow connection. With technology increasing and more Web sites building their sites with more information the slower it is to view a page using a dial-up connection; however it is still the cheapest way to access the Internet, and in some parts of the United States it's the only option available. The most common modem speed for a dial-up connection is 56 Kbps.
High-Speed
High-speed or DSL uses the same phone line as dial-up but it sends the information digitally instead of the analog format, which makes a huge difference. Information sent digitally allows the DSL connections to use less of the bandwidth, therefore you can talk on the phone and surf the Web. Having a high-speed connection will allow you to download pictures and view Web pages easily. One thing to keep in mind is that the further you are from the provider's central office the slower your connection. Average DLS download speeds range from 1.5 Mbps to 5.0 Mbps.
These are just a few descriptions on each to try and make your decision easier. You have to take note on how much you use the Internet. If you're not online too often then a cheap dial-up connection might be all you need. If you like to talk on the phone and surf the Web or if you download games and movies then you might just need a high-speed connection. To each his own so I suggest you make a list of your needs and shop around to compare Internet connection prices.
When Your Internet Connection Hits a Traffic Jam
Hints to get you back up to speed
Sounds like you've developed a problem that might just be easy enough for you to fix. Below are some tips to help you get back up to speed.
Too Many Programs
Check to see that you don't have too many programs installed. Having a lot of programs takes up hard disk space and those programs can slow down Windows, which in turn slows down your Internet connection. Simply delete the ones that you don't use.
Your Computer Could be Infected
Things like viruses, Trojans, worms and spyware can slow you down. It's time to scan your computer with security software. If you lack the software, you can find free security software on line that will work just as good as the ones from your local computer store.
RAM
It might be time to see how much RAM you computer has because it might be time to upgrade.
Minor Modem Problem
You might just be experiencing a slow modem moment. Unplug your modem for a few seconds then plug it back in. Sometimes it's just that easy.
Phone Line
Make sure your phone line is in good condition especially if you live in an older home or apartment.
These are just a few easy tips to keep in mind if you notice your connection is beginning to slow down. Sometimes it's easier to try these hints than to pay for a technician and wait for them to come out and easily fix a problem you could have handled.
Man Without High-Speed Internet
Got the Need for Speed?
Choosing the correct provider
Though money makes the world go around sometimes it's all about what you got under the hood. Choosing a high-speed Internet provider is different for all of us. To some, finding the best rate is more important than the provider, to others download speeds is more optimal than cost.Below I've written down some tips that are helpful when making a decision.
- Find a provider in your area. I've found that connectmyhighspeed.com is a good site to research providers and rates.
- Compare prices and Internet speeds to find the one that fits your needs.
- Know that satellite will be slower than DSL. Also with DSL, the connection will be faster the closer you are to the provider center.
- If you are choosing to get Internet service from your current phone provider consider how that company treats you already. This could be a good time to switch providers if you are unhappy.
- If you have an older model computer make sure it can handle high-speed Internet.
- Make sure to take into account the installation fees you will have to pay upfront.
- Investigate to find out if the provider offers any security software with your Internet purchase.
