Rock and Roll!

An autobiographical scrapbook, High Voltage Tattoo is a must for fans of Kat Von D, star of LA Ink. This book is a slice of Kat's life, with loads of glossy images of some of the finest tattoo work ever created.

Who is Kat Von D?

A brief bio

Born March 8, 1982, Katherine Von Drachenberg would move to the US from Mexico at the age of 4. Growing up in southern California, the little girl was a budding artist at an early age. Raised not only on art but on music, Kat developed a love of classical music, particularly a love for Ludwig van Beethoven, and is a classically trained pianist.

Life drastically changed in her teens, when she received her first tattoo and was introduced to the art form. Getting her start in local tattoo shops, she received no formal apprenticeship. Kat carved out her talents through hard work, studying, and listening to advice from the greats.

Although she was a rising star in the tattooing world, Kat Von D was introduced on a broader scale when she joined the TLC reality show Miami Ink. Eventually she would move on to her own show for TLC, LA Ink and become something of a phenomenon.

In addition to her tattooing career, Kat Von D has also created her own line of makeup in partnership with Sephora and created the Musink festival.

Reviewing High Voltage Tattoo

One reader's opinion

For fans of Kat Von D, and for those who love the art of tattoo imagery, High Voltage Tattoo is compiled in a fashion that will appeal to everyone. Much like any art book, the story is woven with images and words, revealing how Kat grew up and found the world of tattooing and immersed herself in a living art form.

The book also showcases tattoos Kat has created on various clients, from friends, family, and co-workers to the famous and infamous. Kat also discusses the machinery of tattooing, gives some tips as well as "dos and don'ts" when deciding to get a tattoo, and discusses the map of tattoos that cover her own skin.

The book is as much about Kat as it is about who she admires and looks up to. A section is devoted to other artists, from those in the tattooing industry to those in the art world.

Whether you're a fan of tattooing or not, you will find this book an interesting read. Kat's honesty about her work, as well as her own tattoos, gives those opposed to (or those who don't understand) tattooing a different point of view on why tattooing means so much to those who get inked for life.
