Eating processed foods which have lots of salt and fat makes it hard to maintain good blood pressure if you have a problem. I too, love sweet potatoes and I cook and eat the leaves which are very nutritious. 5*

What if you are not sensible by nature and require extra effort for thinking sensible? wil it still help?

Blood pressure is so important to our overall health. People who ignore hypertension are playing with their lives. Great lens.

Excellent lens. A very important subject. When I worked full time for a Silicon Valley company my blood-pressure was a bit high, but now I work (occasionally) for me it is fine.

In answer to your question, no thankfully, but many members of my family have been or are being treated for high blood pressure. I just got some bloodwork back though that shows - shockingly - that my cholesterol is elevated though. I think many of the recommends you show for hbp also would apply to this problem. It always comes down to diet and exercise. And frankly, my giving up those dove milk chocolate candy squares LOL! Great lens!

Thanks for the info. I did not know that sweet potatoes were high in potassium. Looks like I know what I'll be cooking more, not just for Thanksgiving.

I have borderline high blood pressure, but my cardiologist says it is not really hypertension. He was able to tell by doing an EKG, but I still watch my diet and avoid salt. I have so many health problems, that good nutrition is important anyway.

It's always good to see this information, it's helpful to keep things top of mind. It is so easy to not do the right things even though most people know what those things are. You need to develop habits for a period of time before they become a true part of your lifestyle. Thanks,

Thanks for an interesting and informative Lens. Personally I think our bad diets and lack of excercise are the main culprits with high blood pressure.

Great information. Luckily I've never had high blood pressure, even with being overweight. It does run in my family, though, which is one reason I'm trying to nip the weight thing in the butt early... Really good article.

Good idea, thank you - I'll work on it especially since I'm on the lower side myself and know it's not a very good idea to get up fast while sitting etc.

I seemed to be getting higher pressure readings a couple of months ago, but since I lost some weight it's back where it should be.

My family leans more to very low blood pressure--perhaps you could cover this on another lens? there is a real dearth of good information.

My sources say that Yam is as rich in potassium as Sweet Potato but has less vitamin A.

However, I'm not completely sure that what you're referring to is really yam. The names are used interchangeably in U.S. and they both come in all the colors - from white to intense orange. Most of these potato-related tubers sold around the country are indeed sweet potatoes, yams are relatively rare.

I'm adding another module later today to describe all the differences and similarities between the two.

prevention is better than cure. thank you for posting this.
i drink celery juice/starfruit when i have a particularly stressful day which shoots my bp sky high.

I get your irony, it does seem like repeating the same things over and over again...

But then - if you look around what most people are eating - it really doesn't look like it's been told enough times yet, does it?

It's in human nature to take things (including health) for granted - for as long as they serve us well. Only when in serious trouble, most people are willing to introduce some changes to their lifestyles and nutrition and start doing and eating what most of us (deep down) knew all along are better choices.

Although - repeating old truth based on scientific studies makes difference for analytical minds, programmed for "seeing is believing."
  • Corrin Oct 28, 2008 @ 6:31 am | delete
My boss eats oatmeal every morning in our office meeting. I'll overlook the nasty smell and him smacking his lips since it's good for his health.
  • Ferox Oct 27, 2008 @ 10:42 pm | delete
So being sensible is good for your health? Who'd have thought it?

I suppose the more often it's said, the more likely it is to sink in.
  • Heather in Beautiful BC Oct 27, 2008 @ 10:37 pm | delete
Thanks so much for all this information - yes, I did read all of it :)

Now, I have a question - do yams (which are similar to sweet potatoes) have as much potassium as sweet potatoes? Yam are dark orange and sweet potatoes are usually light yellow.

I like most of the foods you mentioned which is a good thing as I keep expecting to find I have high blood pressure, but am working at avoiding it!
  • queersunited Oct 27, 2008 @ 10:27 pm | delete
a vegan or vegetarian diet is a great way to get rid of blood pressure problems, even if you don't want to go 100% elimination of animal proteins will reduce blood pressure.

Fortunately I love my veggies, especially green ones, and eat at least 1 banana a day. I try to eat fairly healthy these days, so the only reason my blood pressure should be high is stress...

I'd love to eat dark chocolate, but often these days it gives me a migraine, so it's not worth the risk. Constant throbbing headaches are just awful...

Very nice useful lens, well worth 5***** - so that's what you get :)
