On this lens I aim to provide you with information on high blood pressure, the symptoms and the various treatments available. High blood pressure is a potentially damaging disease and in the worst cases it can even be fatal, hence the label 'The Silent Killer'. However, it can be managed by following some basic advice which I am going to give to you through this lens.

High Blood Pressure Symptoms

What should I look out for?

Blood pressure medication and monitor

As I mentioned above high blood pressure is often referred to as 'The Silent Killer'. This is because those affected by high blood pressure often do not show any noticeable symptoms until the damage has been done. However, there are a few things you can look out for...

- Severe headaches.
- Breathlessness.
- Nosebleeds.
- Haemorrhages.
- Hyperventilation.
- Tension.
- Palpitations (irregular, rapid beating of the heart).

If you suspect your blood pressure is high then seek the advice of your doctor immediately. The average normal blood pressure is 140 over 85 but this differs based on age, race and geographic location. Generally, anything over this is considered to be high.

High Blood Pressure Medication

What medication is available?

Blood pressure monitor

Although changes to your diet and lifestyle can affect high blood pressure, if it is serious then your doctor will prescribe the appropriate medication to reduce your blood pressure. The various medications are discussed below...

- Antihypertensives or anti-hypertensive drugs.
- Alpha blockers.
- Beta blockers (the role of beta blockers has been reduced in the UK in recent years because it is believed that they can provoke type 2 diabetes).
- Emergency high blood pressure medication (this will bring down high blood pressure very suddenly and can be dangerous but is often required in emergency situations).

Natural High Blood Pressure Treatments

What can I do to lower my blood pressure naturally?

Cigarette being stubbed out in a blood stain

Apart from the appropriate high blood pressure medication that your doctor may prescribe there are a number of things you can do to lower your blood pressure. I have outlined these below...

1) IMPROVE YOUR DIET:-One of the things that increases your blood pressure is when your veins and arteries become covered in fat. By eating a healthier diet in an attempt to reduce your overall body fat level you can reduce the risk of this fat being deposited in your veins and arteries.

2) EXERCISE MORE:-Exercise can also help reduce the build up of fats in your veins and arteries by burning up excess fats in your body.

3) GIVE UP SMOKING:-Smoking causes your arteries and veins to shrink which increases the pressure at which the blood flows through them.

4) REDUCE YOUR ALCOHOL INTAKE:-Evidence suggests that drinking more than the recommended daily intake of alcohol can cause your blood pressure to rise.
