High Heel Shoes

There isn't anything more sexier than a pair of red high heels. We need to know about the history of high heel shoes. As to the future, who knows what's in store? Fashion has a habit of repeating itself..... But as you can see, initially heels weren't just a female thing, but were started for both sexes. At one point, women weren't allowed to wear heels. Admittedly, with the birth of the stiletto in the 50's, they became another weapon in the female arsenal!

History of High-Heeled Shoe

Red is sexy and something about the way a woman's feet looks

Red high-heeled shoe. Raised heels are stated to have been a response to the problem of the rider's foot slipping forward in stirrups while riding. The "rider's heel," approximately 1-1/2" high, appeared around 1500. The leading edge was canted forward to help grip the stirrup, and the trailing edge was canted forward to prevent the elongated heel from catching on underbrush or rock while backing up, such as in on-foot combat. These features are evident today in riding boots, notably cowboy boots.

The simple riding heel gave way to a more stylized heel over its first three decades. Beginning with the French, heel heights among men crept up, often becoming higher and thinner, until they were no longer useful while riding, but were relegated to "court-only" wear. By the late 1600s men's heels were commonly between three and four inches in height.

In 1533, the diminutive wife of the Duke of Orleans, Catherine de' Medici, commissioned a cobbler to fashion her a pair of heels, both for fashion, and to increase her stature. They were an adaptation of chopines (elevated wooden soles with both heel and toe raised not unlike modern platform shoes), but unlike chopines the heel was higher than the toe and the "platform" was made to bend in the middle with the foot.

High-heeled shoes quickly caught on with the fashion-conscious men and women of the French court, and spread to pockets of nobility in other countries. The term "well-heeled" became synonymous with opulent wealth.[citation needed] Both men and women continued wearing heels as a matter of noble fashion throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. When the French Revolution drew near, in the late 1700s, the practice of wearing heels fell into decline in France due to its associations with wealth and aristocracy. Throughout most of the 1800s, flat shoes and sandals were usual for both sexes, but the heel resurfaced in fashion during the late 1800s, almost exclusively among women.

High Heels Chronology

High heels time line

High Heels - A Historical Chronology.

1533

Short-statured Italian bride Catherine d'Medici, married at 14 to the Duke of Orleans, wears shoes with two-inch heels to exaggerate her height. The high heel may have been invented by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519).

1553-1558

Mary Tudor ("Bloody Mary"), another vertically challenged monarch, wears heels as high as possible. From this period until the early 19th century, high heels are frequently in vogue for both sexes.

Mid-1500s

An extreme shoe style called chopines, popular among women in Italy, Spain and France, had pedestals of cork or wood as tall as 24 inches. A Venetian lady wearing chopines needed two servants to help her in and out of a gondola.

1660

French shoemaker Nicholas Lestage, so clever at his trade that some accuse him of sorcery, becomes shoemaker to Louis XIV. The heels of Louis's shoes, some decorated with miniature battle scenes, are as tall as five inches. High "Louis" heels are also fashionable for ladies.

1745

Madame de Pompadour, tiny-footed favorite of Louis XV, popularizes high, narrow "Pompadour" heels. Ladies tape their feet to reduce their apparent size and faint at court.

1793

Marie Antoinette ascends the scaffold to be executed wearing two-inch heels. However, in the wake of the French Revolution heels become lower than at any time in the 18th century.

Early 1800s

Flat shoes and Grecian-style sandals become popular.

Approx. 1865

The "sneaker" or plimsoll, a canvas-topped, rubber-soled shoe, is invented for badminton and tennis. Ladies' heel heights vary but stay below two inches during the rest of the century.

1888

The first heel factory in the United States opened. Making it unnecessary for women to import their shoes from Paris.

1904

The ladies' "pump" or court shoe, a British invention, reaches America. Shoe stores begin to stock shoes with a range of widths around now.

Approx. 1955

Tall "stiletto" heels for women's shoes, invented in Italy by Roger Vivier for Dior, become a fashion rage. Very pointed toes come into vogue for both sexes.

1970s

Return of the platform shoe.

1980s

Return of high heel shoes. Athletic shoes also feature heavily in fashion.

1990s

Return of the platform shoe in various styles and designs including sandals and tennis shoes.

The Making Of Your Shoes

Hu High Heels Store In London

The London Shoe Tailors
Exclusive British-tailored shoes and boots

Here we explain the main stages that are involved in the making of your new shoes or boots. They are completely handmade, with the trained hands and keen eyes of our expert shoe makers (each with an average of 15 years experience). Our staff love what they do and will not allow anything other than the finest quality footwear to leave their factory. When you receive your new footwear, you will see and feel just how justified we are in saying that the quality of our shoes and boots is of the highest standard. Imagine the joy you will have when wearing them, we know you will love your new exclusive footwear.

First we select the leather, from over 2000 rolls of the finest supple leather cowhide. Our buyer travels the world searching for and selecting only the very best leather. Any leather hides/skins we purchase has to pass numerous tests before we buy it, including the feel on both sides, strength, suppleness, flawlessness, smell, tanning, colour and durability. We could buy much cheaper leather but we know this would only produce an inferior product. All our shoes and boots are leather lined, using an extra soft fine kid leather that gives amazing comfort and a sensual feel to your delicate feet and toes.

Your chosen leather and lining is then cut using up to 10 special knives. Our Clicking machine is used for this, pressing from the top and pushing the knives into the leather, perfectly cutting each part of leather to be used for the upper and the lining for the inside.

We hope that you now understand a little about how your footwear is made and that our prices also reflect our quality, workmanship and exclusivity.

Once your leather upper and lining parts are cut all, pieces have to be slowly passed through the Skiving machine, which removes any rough edges, leaving clean perfectly trimmed and cut leather parts, ready to build your shoes or boots.

Next toe puffs are ironed on by hand, for support and shape at the toe. Upper quarters are stitched together, rubbed down and all edges folded in and back. The heels are countered and stiffeners sewn in to give you a firm solid heel.

The lining material is then glued to the upper and then sewn to the upper; we only use natural adhesives in this process.
Next the moulded shaped heel part of the upper is formed first by using a back mold warming machine, that warms the leather to the correct temperature then it is stretched round a steel heel mold, pulling it into shape. Once cooled the heel shape is now permanent.

The upper is then pulled onto the last, the toe is warmed (as the heel) and stretched over the toe, and this forms the toe shape. The insole is then sewn and tacked onto the upper whilst on the last. All our insoles have toughened steel shanks, extra strong for durability, support and strength.
In this example the shoes have a 7 inch heel and 2 inch platform. The platform is dressed/covered with the same leather, then the platform is stuck securely with our natural adhesive onto the last.

Now the sole of the shoe is warmed up, so it is pliable and it is stuck securely onto the last. We have a special sole pressing machine for this. Once the sole is permanently fixed, the last is then removed.
The final part to be fixed to your shoe is the heel. The raw heel is dressed/covered with leather. The heel is positioned on the underside, a solid steel heel plate is placed on the inside of the shoe(under the heel), then using our heel attachment machine, 6 small steel nails are put into the heel. Most shoe manufacturers do not use this process and that's why so many high heels just break from the shoe upper. Here at London Shoe Tailers we'd rather spend that extra time and money to produce the finest most durable footwear that we can.

Now your shoe has been built, the last stage is probably the most important, 2 senior craftsmen will now inspect every detail of your new shoes or boots. Every little detail is checked. No defects are accepted and a single fault may result in the shoe being destroyed. Once checked your shoes are carefully packed and posted to you.

We hope that you now understand a little about how your footwear is made and that our prices also reflect our quality, workmanship and exclusivity.

If you click on this link it will show you the making of shoes.

Heels in 1930's

A variety of shoe styles was available during this era. Rounded toes were seen with wide, thick heels. Pumps and flat shoes were available, and ankle strap styles with moderate heels also appeared. Slip-on styles, lace-up shoes and buckle shoes were all worn. Spectator or two-tone shoes appeared in the early thirties. Rubber companies were actually endorsed for their shoe soles in the Sears' Catalog.

Making High Heels Comfortable For Our Feet

Give me a pair that feel good

The question is:
Can tech make high-heels comfortable?

Working with an MIT-trained rocket scientist, a New England firm unveiled a breakthrough that it claims will make sexy high-heels nearly as comfortable to wear as sensible shoes.

HBN Shoe LLC of Salem, N.H., markets products under the Insolia brand name, and HBN said today it has started supplying selected retailers with $9.99 weight-shifting inserts that are purported to be the last word in footwear comfort technology.

According to the company, high-heel shoes equipped with these Insolia inserts shift the wearer's body weight in a way that decreases "forefoot pressure, lessening the strain on the feet and legs."

HBN said the research team that helped develop the product included a rocket scientist with a degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a podiatrist.

"Now science has come to the sexy world of high heel shoes," HBN president Michael Backler said in a statement. "We have developed a 21st century scientific solution to the problem of high-heel pain and discomfort. Finally, women can feel comfortable all day long in any high heel of their choice."

Italian Fashion - High Heels

From Cavemen to the Catwalk

Trying on a pair of buttery soft stiletto Gucci boots can reduce even the most sane and poised woman into a giddy mess. There are few experiences in life that can rival the sheer pleasure and excitement women feel when shopping for shoes at Fendi and Prada in Italy. Glancing at the shelves of possibilities, their eyes light up like a kid in a candy store and their heart might flutter like the first time they fell in love.

Owning closets of shoes may seem frivolous and superficial, but in reality women are merely paying homage to the bricklayers of our modern civilization. Shoes are one of the oldest inventions of our primitive ancestors. They were first created with a piece of hide or plaited grass to protect feet from sharp rocks and rugged terrain. Shoes are also constantly referenced to in the Bible and depictions of high heels dating back to 4000BC were found on the walls of Egyptian temples and tombs.

Most people know that fashion trends are cyclical, peaking in popularity and then being discarded until they are introduced in another decade, but you might be surprised to learn that most of the shoe styles that are seen gliding down the runways in Milan and Paris have a long and fascinating history of several hundred or even thousand of years behind them.

One mystery to men is why women would voluntarily torture their toes with pointy toed shoes or high heels, yet these continue to be the most popular styles for dress shoes today. Sometimes fashion just trumps comfort, not unlike the medieval period of Europe, when luxury and extravagance was more sought after than practicality. During this time, the Crackow was designed, which was a shoe with a 5 inch pointed toe, that was eventually prohibited by law because it was almost impossible to walk in.

Finally, they emerged again as factories began to open in Italy and other parts of Europe in the late 19th century. The US was not far behind when it opened its first high heel factory in 1888. Women favored modest styles until the Roaring 20's, when hemlines rose and elegant shoes showcased bare legs. In 1954, Roger Vivier designed the first stiletto heel with its infamous bold arch for the house of Dior. But it is Italy that has taken the fashion world by storm as the global leader of luxury shoes.

How High Heels Might Boost Your Sex Life

The Right Shoes May Help Train Muscles Used During Sex

RSS High heels may improve a woman's sex life, a new study has found - but not in the way you might imagine.

The right heels may help more than just how you look, new research suggests.
(Corbis)The effect of heels on the male libido is well-known, but this research looked at the physical benefits of high heels for women. Dr. Maria Angela Cerruto, a urologist at the University of Verona, Italy, found that the tippy-toe posture of heels can tone a woman's abdomen and pelvic floor.

If true, not only will a nice high-heeled shoe attract the man, it may keep him, too.

While high heels are more commonly linked with problems of posture and bunions, Cerruto defends one of her own favorite articles of fashion.

"Like many women, I like high-heeled shoes; they make you appear more slender and taller," she says.

And she is pleased to have shown they can be good for you, too.

In a study to be published in the journal European Urology, Cerruto presented the results of her tests on 66 women under the age of 50.

She found that if they stood with their feet at a 15-degree angle to the ground (the equivalent of a 3-inch heel) the electrical activity in their pelvic muscles was less - indicating the muscles were more relaxed with higher heels, thus improving their strength and ability to contract.

"We now hope to prove that wearing heels during daily activity may reduce the need for pelvic exercises," says Dr. Cerruto.

Exercise - Step by Step
That would be great news for most women, who not only struggle with regular exercising, but who are also supposed to remember to do their "Kegels" - named after the doctor who first established the regimen in 1948 - or pelvic floor gymnastics.

According to the Mayo Clinic Web site, "pregnancy, childbirth, excess weight, chronic coughing and just getting older can all take a toll on your pelvic floor muscles." The guide recommends regular exercise of those muscles, adding that this can also be "helpful to women who have persistent problems" reaching sexual gratification.

If wearing heels is enough to keep your pelvic floor toned, many lovers of flats might consider stepping up. Marina Sapia, a new mother in Rome, lit up at the news that wearing heels would do it. "I don't wear heels, because I am so tall, but I might start, if this is true," she told ABC News.
And designers of high-heeled fashion welcomed the news that their creations might finally be considered healthy.

Manolo Blahnik, a shoe designer specializing in sexy high heels, told the Daily Mail that this was "wonderful news."

"When you put on a high heel, it makes life more exciting," Blahnik claims.

"It's a way to appeal to the male species, to attract," he added, "and it works. I have men who tell me that heels have saved their marriage."

He complains of being "hounded for years" about how bad it was for the posture, but found it puzzling. His mother wore them until she was 87 with no ill consequences.

How High Is Too High?
But even Blahnik admits that there is such a thing as a heel that is too high.

"I think there's a limit, though. Anything over four-and-a-half inches is just too much. You can't walk properly; it's no longer elegant."

But in fact, even four-and half inches is too high to be healthy. A limited height - practical - is the key. "Moderately high heels," Cerruto calls them.

The news of high-heel benefits for the pelvis intrigues Sabrina Saudelli, a Rome beautician.

"It makes sense that heels are good for abdominal and pelvic muscles," she thinks. "To counter the lean forward, you tighten the abdominal muscles and push the pelvis under."

An advocate for wearing heels in general, Saudelli claims "a small heel is actually good for the posture, much better than ballerina flats." But truly high heels, and especially a wobbly stiletto, is bad for the back and a risk for twisted ankles.

"Once you go over three inches regularly," she adds, "your posture and back are going to suffer."

So for all their sex appeal, stilettos, sadly, don't count.

Fetish Heel Shoes

If you worship your shoes and feet

Fetish shoes were beginning to mark a recognition in the minds of those who worship shoes and feet. I had thought that shoe/feet fetishes were attributable to more recent decades, but even back in the 30s an extremely high stiletto heel and a platform sole were adorned by worshipers.

It's hard to grow taller naturally after puberty. The best bet is to use shoe lifts. I'm 24 and only 167cm, with shoe lifts I'm 174cm and look fine standing with other men.

That's very good idea to increase height. I notice the trend that Asian are getting taller while the American are getting shorter. This might be due to the diet that has a long term effect. Anyway I have a cousin who used to be very short and small in size. He bought a pair of shoe lifts and since then he live a more confident and better life. That's something like this> height insoles.

    Hi Tally,

I didn't own a pair of flat shoes from 18 until I was 30. I still wear high heels anytime I'm away from the farm.

If they are good material and made well, the comfort level is better than most flatter shoes , in my opinion.

I don't however wear the pointed toe too much...love the squared toe, gives you lots of toe room.

    What a fabulous blog.

    Enjoyed it a lot!

Great lens! I USED to wear the high high heel shoes, but I agree with Becca. When you stop wearing them, the low heels feel sooooo much better. Think I'll even skip wearing them around the house -- my sandals and flats are good enough for that. Great information.

    Hi Tally,

Where did you find all of this stuff? Very cool! Clearly, it's not for everyone, but for us women who just love shoes. Keep it coming.
I'm an online shoe retailer in Atlanta and loved it!

Sexy look yes, but ouch on the walking part. I agree with Becca. I'd just use for around the house.

I think I'll get mine out and vacuum ala Donna Reed! Oh now where are my pearls!

Hi Tally, I have the exact pair of red high heels posted a the top of the page - I bought them online from Zappos - don't wear them much because once you stop wearing heels, it is hard to go back to them as flats or weggies start to feel so comfortable - hence, this is where the statement "old lady comforts" come from. I think I'll go put my red heels on and just walk around the house in them - ease myself back into sexy.

Hey Tally! Great lense...I haven't worn heels in years, so guess that means I'm not very sexy...haha! Hopefully that isn't the only qualifier...tehe, oh I'm being bad. This is a great lense. I'm trying to get back to squidoo-ing more myself, it's been a while:-)

Hight Heels on the Red Carpet

Christian Louboutin Daffodile PumpsI do believe the celebrities love these designer shoes by Christian Louboutin Daoffodile pumps. The beautiful Heidi Klum has been sporting these pumps. I do believe she has the edge on wearing the very high heels. You think it has anything to do with the fact that she is a model and has those gorgeous long legs. She wears them with a style and elegance. Go Heidi! Another two celebrities that are wearing them is the beautiful Kim Kardashian and Beyonce Knowles. It does not matter if they are on the red carpet or just out for a casual day of shopping they are rocking the Christian Louboutin Daffodile pumps. They come in a variety of different colors.
You want to rock a pair of them and have no problem with the extra high heel then you can get you a pair. Come back and let me know how you felt wearing them.
