Highland Fling Steps

Ranked #2,554 in Music, #70,391 overall

The Highland Fling dance is an ancient Scottish Highland folkdance. It is danced by a single dancer (making the dance a popular competition dance nowadays), with the dancer remaining on the spot. As not much room is need for practice, people may easily practice at home. and making the dance eminently suitable for schools. Originally performed by men, the Highland Fling is now danced by both men and women. Junior competitions for girls are very popular.

Music For Highland Flings

This CD has 3 tracks of music for highland flings:

  • Highland Fling 4 Steps
  • HIghland Fing 6 Steps (medium tempo)
  • HIghland Fing 6 Steps (slow tempo)
The music can be previewed online if you follow the link. Ignore the first track on the CD - once you get beyond it, the music for the highland flings is authentic Scottish bagpipes. You can also but individual MP3s, but if you are interested in Scottish Highland dancing, then this is a great CD as it has music for most of the common dances.

Eight Highland Fling Steps

The highland fling starts and ends with a bow (3 counts in a bowed position, 3 counts straightened). Although individual dancers may dance a wide variety of steps, the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing recognises 8 steps. Depending on the competition level, dancers will be expected to dance either 4, 6 or all 8 of these steps:

❶  - Shedding
❷  - First Back-Stepping
❸  - Toe and Heel
❹  - Rocking
❺  - Second Back-Stepping
❻  - Cross-Over
❼  - Shake and Turn
❶  - Last Shedding

"Shedding" and "Last Shedding" are always the first and last steps. The order of steps may be mandated or left flexible.

Highland Fling Steps Tempo

I was always brought up on the fling as a fast, energetic dance. Over the years championship temp has been dropping and is now down to 114 beats per minute (bpm). Even when I learned the dance in the late 60's, 150+ bpm was common and historically the tempo for the highland fling's steps was closer to 200 bpm.
