Beautiful Breckenridge
Hiking the trails of Breckenridge, Colorado, is a perfect daytime activity for almost anyone lucky enough to have an afternoon off in the mountains. If you approach the day with the right attitude, choosing your trail might just be the only real decision you'll have to make to enjoy the refreshing beauty that is Breckenridge. Still, tackling the trails takes a bit of preparation. Consider the following before setting out:
Rocky Mountain High
1. Talk to Locals.Breckenridge is a town full of friendly faces that want to help make your visit enjoyable. Since the town is packed with hiking options, one of the best ways to ensure you find a good trail is just to ask around. Explain what you're looking for in terms of altitude gain, length, and scenery, and a local is sure to point you in the right direction. Consider timing and be sure to plan accordingly. Afternoon rain showers are common in Breckenridge.so be sure that you get an early start. If you do end up hiking later in the afternoon, just be sure that you're not hiking too far of a distance in one direction when a storm is approaching. High and open elevation is not the place you want to be when lightening moves in.
2. Know where you're going.
After you've found your trail, be sure to spend some time studying the map at the trailhead. Often, you'll find that many different trails lead off of one another, so be sure to plan your exact route from the start, and remember to keep track of turns or points where you've moved from one trail to the next. If a paper trail map is available at the trailhead, be sure to take one along and stop and take note of your direction every once in a while. Many trails will also be marked with posts or symbols, so keep your eyes peeled for guides along the way.
3. Don't get burned.
Sunny days are a part of the Breckenridge lifestyle. However, due to the high elevation, it can easily become a threat if you're not prepared. A good pair of sunglasses or even a hat can help shelter you from the sun's rays. Additionally, it's imperative that you not only cover all exposed skin with a high SPF sunscreen, but that you also carry a bottle in your hiking pack and apply it throughout the day. And, don't wait until you're on the trail to lather up. Applying sunscreen a half hour ahead of time will help keep you protected once you start your hike.
4. Drink up.
Even if you've acclimated to the high altitude in Breckenridge before your hike, you still need to keep the water bottle handy. Not only will the views take your breath away, but many of the more strenuous hikes might also find you feeling short of oxygen. Be sure to not only drink plenty of water before your hike, but also bring plenty with you, and take small sips throughout your hike.
5. Gear up.
Along with the water and sunscreen that are necessities in your pack, be sure to also load up with quick energy foods. Nuts, power bars, and dried fruit are great hiking accompaniments. While there's nothing better than a picnic at the top of the trail, you might also consider snacking throughout your hike to keep you energized. Additionally, round out your pack with an extra layer of clothes in case the temperature drops. A rain coat can also come in handy, as can an extra pair of socks (especially if you're hiking anywhere near a creek or water source).
Whether you're a beginner or advanced hiker, or anywhere in between, Breckenridge offers great access to some of Colorado's most beautiful trails. With a bit of preparation, you're sure to be on your way to a great adventure.
