Return to Transylvania Part 1 of 2

Great Documentary by the originator of the HHoF Tribute site

A very informative film done by a great fan of the Hilarious House of Frightenstein. I'm so happy that Mr. Ben Kane was able to put this together and that he has chosen to share it with old and new fans alike. Thanks to user DAKlives for uploading this to YouTube.

Hilarious House Of FrightensteinReturn toTransylvania Pt.1/2

Thanks to Ben Kane (i hope you don't mind me sharing this I'm a huge fan and this is an excellent peice, but if so contact me and i will remove it) please visit Ben's site: http://www.frightenstein.com from site: "After nearly 6 years, my documentary "Return to Transylvania" is now complete. It was well-received at the Frightenstein Fest, and after some additional minor tweaking it is now ready for the internet. It was shot early in my second year at Sheridan's Media Arts course and a seven-minute version was edited at that time. My crew consisted of Eric Yu and Joe Raasch, and we also worked together on the original edit. The resulting film had numerous problems (many were beyond our control) including very poor audio quality and a few pacing problems. It also did not feature the interview segments with Joe Torbay, as these were shot after the original documentary was already edited. The new 2005 version retains the feel and attitude of the original, but is much improved technically and aesthetically." DAK update i have gotten permission via email from Ben Kane to post these :)

Count Frightenstein

Count Frightenstein

What can be said about Count Frightenstein? Madcap inventor? Mad scientist? Self-made businessman? Perhaps to say that he is a wildly gestulating, cape-sweeping, tennis-shoe wearing, sign-of-the-three-toed-sloth flaunting megalomaniac is a tad much. He does have his moments. His dedication to get his creation, Bruce J. Monster working again is quite impressive. Count Frightenstein was masterfully portrayed by the late Billy Van. Mr. Van's delightful comedic antics as Count Frightenstein (and other Frightenstein characters) have been brought back to the viewing public thanks to the hard work of the people at Critical Mass Releasing Inc. in Toronto, Ontario Canada.

Igor

Igor from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

Igor is Count Frightenstein's faithful servant. He is a guy with a job not many others would survive a day let alone over 800 years! He and the Count might not always agree and he may step on his boss's toes on occasion, but generally they work things out. Usually because of the Sign of the Three-Toed Sloth. Igor would sometimes appear solo in a Dr. Pet Vet sketch by discussing the day's animal guest over the phone with the good Doctor. Igor was portrayed by the late Fishka Rais. Mr. Rais's Igor has been brought back to the viewing public thanks to the hard work of the people at Critical Mass Releasing Inc. in Toronto, Ontario Canada.

The Count 2

The Count 2 from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

Played by Guy Big, the Count 2 (as I refer to the character) was never explained. Was he the Count's brother Sigfried? Related in anyway? Perhaps he was the result of one of Count Frightenstein's many exoeriments. The way that the Count and Count 2 interacted makes me lean more toward a brother. He had no fear of the sign of the Three-Toed Sloth and got away with stomping on the Count's feet. No respect, that's family for you.

The Wolfman

The Wolfman from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

One of the most (if not the most) popular sketches of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein featured The Wolfman, portrayed by Billy Van. The DJ for the radio station EECH, The Wolfman played many popular songs that are now considered classics. As is the case with a lot of shows that are revived, the cost to license the music now is just too high. Luckily for fans of the show and The Wolfman sketches, Critical Mass Releasing has kept what they can of The Wolfman - minus songs and the psychodelic background he and Igor would dance in front of. No doubt they would love to give old and new fans alike the full Wolfman experience but I think we can understand why that may not be possible.

The Professor

The Professor from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

Professor Julius Sumner Miller, as himself, brought the wonders of Physics to Castle Frightenstein. The clip that I have selected lets the Professor speak for himself regarding his part in the show. I honestly don't remember this part of the show from watching as a child. However, the subconscious must have remembered because when I got to grade nine and the class did the same experiment that is shown here, it felt "been there, done that." It's amazing how things will stick with you even when you don't consciously remember. I find these segments very interesting now that I am older. Honestly, I feel as though I'm viewing them for the first time, even though I know I watched this show faithfully at 5:30 in the morning between the ages of 3 and 8.

Dr. Pet Vet

Dr. Pet Vet

The kindly veterinarian of Frightenstein Castle, played by Billy Van, was the most normal of all the characters. Maybe that's why he scared SuperHippie. Dr. Pet Vet brings a different animal to visit Igor each time with the hope that Igor will finally get permission from the Sloth to keep a pet.

The Oracle

The Oracle from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

The Oracle, played by Billy Van, is a teller of fortunes that seems to have a lot of misfortune himself. The gag of the sketch was the breaking of the crystal ball. In some segments he gives information regarding a certain mystical question. One such item was the God's Eye. I completely forgot about this item. I made one in grade school. I have no idea what religion or belief system it is from but I remember making it and bringing it home. I wonder what happened to it?

Grizelda The Ghastly Gourmet

Grizelda the Ghastly Gourmet

Grizelda, played by Billy Van, was my personal favorite character when I watched this as a kid. I'm pleased to say that she is still my favorite character now that I have rediscovered the show. As a child I was waited with bated breath for her to walk into the pot that was hanging from the rafter. "The inevitable!" as Grizelda herself would say. Now I enjoy watching how much fun Billy Van had playing this outrageous woman.

Bwana Clyde Batty

Bwana Clyde Batty At Your Service

Move over National Geographic, here is Bwana Clyde Batty's Zany Zoo! Portrayed by Billy Van, Bwana Clyde Batty used his film projector to show viewers some interesting footage of assorted wild animals. As was the case with the Hilarious House of Frightenstein, the commentary was both informative and comical.

The Librarian

The Librarian from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

The Librarian, played by Billy Van, had the goal of frightening viewers with tales of horror. Unfortunately for me, this went right over my head as a child. Only now do I appreciate the humor of this sketch. Isn't it odd how things stay with you subconsciously? When I read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, I pictured the Hogwart's caretaker, Argus Filch in my mind very similar to the Librarian. The similarity became even stranger to me when I discovered the Librarian had a cat, Horrendous, just as Argus Filch had a cat, Mrs. Norris. I'm so glad I have the opportunity to enjoy this show again. I can't thank the people at Critical Mass Releasing Inc. enough for bringing this show back to air in Canada.

Gronk

Gronk from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

The purple sea monter puppet named Gronk was controlled and voiced by Joe Torbay. Yet another part of the show I simply don't remember from viewing as a child. Boy did I miss out. These bits with Gronk and the Count are incredibly funny. You can really see in these segments how the actors were allowed to improvise so there are technically no bloopers. How they managed to get through some of these sketches without cracking up I don't know. I know with this particular one I was laughing so hard at one of Gronk's questions I completely missed the Disneyland part, heard the "scoreless tie" line and laughed for the rest of bit.

Harvey Wallbanger

Harvey Wallbanger from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

Harvey Wallbanger, controlled and voiced by Joe Torbay, was the gruff clerk at the Castle's Dead Letter Office. He would get visits from Grizelda and also from the Count. Both characters delighted in teasing Harvey in their own way, those Harvey would sometimes get the better of the Count.

Maharishi

The Maharishi from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

The Maharishi, played by Billy Van, was a tongue-in-cheek sketch that reflected a popular trend from the time of the show. Guru's were popping up everywhere. I never understood what he was saying when I was a kid but I did find the flowers (with the sound effect) quite amusing. I didn't even know this character had a name until I was at www.frightenstein.com and doublechecked at www.imdb.com.

The Gorilla

The Gorilla From The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

The Gorilla, played by Billy Van, is one of those characters, like Wile E. Coyote, that makes you wonder why they keep trying. Though mostly remembered for simply falling over(usually with the help of a golf ball to the head), the Gorilla sometimes did other things as this clip illustrates.

SuperHippie

SuperHippie from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein

SuperHippie, played by Mitch Markowitz, was the resident superhero of Castle Frightenstein. He claimed Superman was his father and that Batman was his uncle. How he ended up at Castle Frightenstein is anyone's guess. Maybe the Count put an add in the Grope and Maul. SuperHippie had short segments that featured him flying throught the sky super-fast or perched in improbable places.

Grammar Slammer Bammer

Grammar Slammer Bammer From The HHoF

The Grammar Slammer Bammer, played by Joe Torbay, was a big purple monster who was there to intimidate Igor into using good grammar. The disembodied voice of the Grammar Slammer, also Joe Torbay, would question Igor about something he said incorrectly. The Bammer would grumble and growl as Igor tried to correct himself. In this clip the Bammer is the subject of Igor's sentence and he looks shocked at how the conversation between Igor and the Grammar Slammer goes.

The Tulips from The Hilarious House of Frightenstein
