Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse
I discovered this lighthouse last March when we were taking a drive in southern Florida with our little granddaughter. The park had a great playground so we were able to accomplish two functions in one stop....giving Rachel some play time and letting Grandma photograph a lighthouse. It doesn't get much better than that!!

Black and White Skeletal Lighthouse

The lighthouse at Hillsboro Inlet was built in 1906-1907. The tower is 142 feet tall and is a skeletal design. The bottom of the skeletal tower is white and the top half of the tower, along with the lantern is black. The lighthouse is operated by the Coast Guard and is only open to the public during tour dates. You can find out more information from the Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society at www.hillsborolighthouse.org
Rachel and the Lighthouse

In this photo my granddaughter, Rachel, is standing in front of a ship's bell that is in the park across from the lighthouse. There is a good view of the lighthouse in the background.

Lighthouse Framed in Palms

I had fun framing my photos with the Palm trees in the park. They made an interesting way to photograph the lighthouse.
The Hillsboro lighthouse was originally built in Chicago and then sent by barge down the Mississippi to St. Louis, where it delighted crowds at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. After the fair it was then purchased by the government and reassembled at distant Hillsboro Inlet.
In 1907 the government purchased the 1st order Fresnel lens, which still functions in the lighthouse today. It has a range of twenty-eight miles.

Lighthouse Poems and Songs
Leaves of Grass
From Montauk Point
By Walt Whitman
I stand as on some mighty eagle's beak,
Eastward the sea absorbing, viewing,
(nothing but sea and sky,)
The tossing waves, the foam,
the ships in the distance,
The wild unrest, the snowy, curling caps --
that inbound urge and urge of waves,
Seeking the shores forever.

Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse
Wikipedia description
Wikipedia has a great description of the lighthouse and some of it's history. I found it interesting that it was honored on a postage stamp.
Hillsboro Inlet Light is located on the north side of Hillsboro Inlet, midway between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, in Hillsboro Beach, Florida. The light marks the northern limit of the Florida Reef, an underwater coral formation on the lower east coast of the state.
In 1901, the United States Lighthouse Establishment persuaded Congress to authorize the construction of a lighthouse in the dark area between Jupiter Inlet Light and Fowey Rocks Light. In the second half of the 20th century, this inlet became an increasingly busy waterway. Hillsboro Inlet Light is considered one of the most powerful lights in the world with a beam that can be seen 28 miles.
The octagonal iron pyramidal tower was built at Russel Wheel & Foundry Co in Detroit, Michigan, moved to the Hillsboro Inlet Light Station in 1906, and lit on March 7, 1907. Its second-order bivalve Fresnel lens emits a light measuring 5.5 megacandelas and is placed 136 feet (41 m) above sea level. Automated in 1974, the light acts both as a coastal navigational aide and as a support to local water traffic.
The light was relit in 2000, with 400 pounds (180 kg) of mercury replaced by a specially designed ball-bearing assembly.
In 2003, Hillsboro Inlet Light was honored with a 37¢ U.S. postage stamp.

- I have visited about three, but it was long ago. One was in San Diego, one is fairly near me, and I can't remember where the other one was -- I was very young when I toured it -- I just know it was in California. You've done a good job. The palm trees really do make a nice frame.
