Hawaiian Islands music then and now has a place for everyone. You can feel the tradewinds blowing, with conch shells echoing along the mountain sides and see hula dancers dancing may be an image that many hold for Hawaii's yesteryears. The polynesians brought with them their gord instruments, bamboo instruments, uli uli rattlers that you see hula dancers wave and shake with feathers, stones, drums and chanting. The famous love song "Aloha Oe" by, Queen Liliuokalani. She wrote over 150 songs. "Aloha Oe" was heard at the 1932 Olympic Games at Los Angeles and was heard as far away as New Zealand, Africa, and Mexico. Portugese master craftsman and instrument makers Manuel Numnes, Joao Fernandes, and Augustine Dias invented and developed the ukulele. Around 1910 Samuel K. Kamaka, became an apprentice to making ukuleles under Manuel Nunes which today is the world famous Kamaka Ukulele.
In 1927, Bob Lukens and Johnny Noble penned "Aloha Oe Blues". July 3, 1935 Webley Edwards popular radio program "Hawaii Calls" first aired. 1937 hit song "Sweet Leilani" by Harry Owens the Royal Hawaiian Band's director in 1934. Harry Owens created the hapa haole songs. Don Ho who gave the world so much lovely songs began in the 1960s and was Hawaii's Ambassador to the world. The unforgettable Elvis Presley's "Blue Hawaii" with many hit songs like "Kuuipo" a favorite locally. 1970's musical duo Cecilio Rodriguez and Henry Kapono better known as Cecilio and Kapono exploded in the music scene. Amongst other greats or yesteryear till now are many. Today Jake Shimabukuro to Hawaii's artists that went to Carnegie Hall to Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners or not they all brought their musical talents for us to enjoy.
