Reading and Revelations

My mom bought me this book to read right after I was diagnosed with cancer. Because I had several other books in my "stack", I did not get the chance to read it until I was about halfway through my chemotherapy. I'll have to chalk the timing up to Divine Intervention there, as I do not think I would have been ready to read it before then. Of course we all know that God's timing is perfect, right?

Hinds Feet on High Places is an allegory that takes you on a personal journey with the main character, "Much Afraid". She must travel up a difficult and rocky mountainside to develop "hinds' feet" in order to reach the "high places." She is encouraged on her way by the Chief Shepherd, who comes to aid her when she calls, and she is accompanied by two companions, Sorrow and Suffering.

Depending on what you've faced in your life, this book can be a very emotional read (it was for me anyway). I highly recommend it to anyone that has struggled with challenges in their life ~ it's worth every tissue! :o)

What exactly is an allegory anyway?

In literature an allegory is using rhetoric to tell a story instead of plain language. This may include symbolism used to communicate a message figuratively instead of literal language. The Old Testament's creation story could be interpreted as an allegory. Adam represents man, Eve represents woman, the apple might represent temptation and weakness, and the serpent obviously represents evil.

Hannah Hurnard on Wikkipedia

Hannah Hurnard (1905-1990) is a twentieth century Christian author, best known for her allegory Hinds Feet on High Places.

Hurnard was born in 1905 in Colchester, England to Quaker parents. She graduated from Ridgelands Bible College of Great Britain in 1926. In 1932 she became an independent missionary, moving to Haifa, Israel. Her work in Israel lasted 50 years, although she would later maintain a home in England as well.

Hurnards early writings (especially Hinds Feet on High Places and the sequel Mountain of Spices) were embraced by the mainstream Christian community, but later on in her life she seems to have departed from orthodoxy.

Eagles' Wings to the Higher Places has been said to support non-orthodox beliefs in pantheism, universalism, and gnosticism. Unveiled Glory'' tells of how she came to believe in Universal reconciliation.Hannah Hurnard: Unveiled Glory... Click here to read the rest of the article

An excerpt from the Preface...

Perhaps the Lord will use it to speak comfort to some of his loved ones who are finding themselves forced to keep company with Sorrow and Suffering, or who walk in darkness and have no light or feel themselves tossed with tempest and not comforted.

It may help them to understand a new meaning in what is happening, for the experiences through which they are passing are all part of the wonderful process by which the Lord is making real in their lives the same experience which made David and Habak cry out exultantly, "The Lord God maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon mine High Places" (Ps. 18:33 and Hab. 3:19).

It was a wonderful book that really mirrored my life

betta_addict says:

Yes, I've read this two years ago along with another books by the same author, Mountain of Spices...The book reminds us that there is no such thing as a Super Christian or a Christian who doesn't sin...Instead, it reminds us of the book of Songs, and that though we are dark, we are lovely still.. :)

jenokson says:

This book was introduced to me by someone I spoke to in an online chatroom over 15 years ago. It was lifechanging for me, and I've recommended it to countless others as well. I love this book!

Ilona1 says:

I thought it was deeply meaningful, and it was helpful in understanding the Christian walk. I think, next to the Bible, it is one of the important books to read.

LizMac60 says:

It's a long time since I read it but I found it very helpful. I think there is an other book about a shepherd.

Denise Cummings Meeks says:

It is an AWESOME readAnd I suggest it to all, whether walking in Christ or seeking to understand the walk.

Books that have deeply affected me are "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan (a classic!), fiction and non-fiction by Randy Alcorn including "Lord Foulgrin's Letters" and "Edge of Eternity" (another great allegory), the writings of C.S. Lewis ... my list is HUGE! I could go on and on ...
