Hindu Pushups: What Do You Know About This Workout?

Pushups are an incredibly popular exercise for both men and women alike. They're one of the very few exercises that work nearly every muscle on your body. For this reason, I find it very hard to recommend against them. However, doing them over and over again, day after day, will actually work against you. Your muscles will very quickly become accustom to the repeated movements, and thus stop developing. It's important to throw in some variations now and again to switch it up for you muscles. One such variation of the pushups is the Hindu Pushup.

Hindu Pushups. I'm Sorry, What?

I usually get that reaction from my clients when I mention these little pushup wonders to them. Hindu pushups are actually a variation of the more popular workout, the pushup.

Dive bombers pushups and the Hindu pushups are very similar except for one significant difference. When you perform Dive bombers pushups, you need to bend your arms again to go back to the start position.

When you perform a Hindu pushup, you do not have to take the same path that you did when you started the exercise. But with the Dive bomber pushups, you have to do the same thing that you did when you started out the exercise.

How to Perform Hindu Pushups

You can start a Hindu pushup the way you would for a normal pushup in the "up" position with your arms extended fully. Spread your feet wider than your shoulder width.

Slowly walk your hands backwards until your butt points straight to the air and your arms and legs are positioned perfectly straight. If other people would look at your side, it would seem as if you are in an upside-down "V" position.

Then, slowly bend your elbows to move your body forward towards the ground. When your head nears the ground, arch your back until you are facing the ceiling. As you do this, straighten your arms.

Push yourself back to the starting position but keep your arms straight as you do this.

*Note: You should perform the whole process in a flowing motion, as if you are a wave crashing into the shore. Avoid being too clunky. You should also exhale while you are facing towards the ceiling.

The Benefits of Hindu Pushups

People may think that Hindu pushups are over glorified shoulder workouts. You should try about a dozen or more of these pushups and you'll realize it's the other way around. These pushups don't just work on your shoulders, but the arms, chest, back, and legs, too. This workout helps strengthen your body, but best of all it improves your stamina and flexibility.

When Should You Perform Hindu Pushups

People should perform Hindu pushups in high repetitions. This is why it is not appropriate to use it for normal strength training programs. If you are aiming for improvements in strength and size, you should use higher weights with lower repetitions, and not these types of pushups. But these pushups are really good workouts, and can even compliment your calisthenics workouts. You can perform these pushups when you do not have access to the gym or if you are in your hotel room, or if you just want to try a different workout.
