A revision of traditional squats and pushups

When compared to traditional squats and pushups, Hindu squats and Hindu pushups are unique variations on these well-known bodyweight exercises. Indian wrestlers have used Hindu squats, which are known as bethaks, and Hindu pushups, which are known as dands, for decades. Matt Furey's Combat Conditioning gives a great example of these exercises as part of a comprehensive bodyweight exercise routine. Some believe the products offered by Furey to be "over-hyped," however, due to his experience as a former Kung Fu and wrestling champion, he has a lot of experience with strength-training and endurance.

Hindu squats and Hindu pushups are a great addition to any bodyweight calisthenics program, as opposed to being methods used to build power, speed, endurance and strength, as Furey claims in Combat Conditioning. In order to get the most out of these exercises, high repetitions should be completed. If you are looking to maximize your strength gains, you should look more at a low repetition, heavy weight training routine, but Hindu squats and pushups will work your muscles in different and unique ways compared to traditional squat or pushup exercises, while improving your cardiovascular system as well.

Hindu Squats

Hindu squats work much like traditional squats, focusing the work on your calves, hamstrings and quads, as well as working your lower back and hips as you improve your lung capacity during each exercise. Stand with your hands pulled to your chest as you begin the Hindu squat. You will then extend your hands toward the floor behind you as you lower down into the squat. Rise up on your toes as you near the bottom region of your squat. Then, as you extend your arms in front of you, propel your body upward at the same time. Then, just bring your hands back in to your chest and start your second repetition.

The motion used to complete a Hindu squat should be fluid, not forced. Breathing during this exercise will take some time getting used to. For example, breathing is completed opposite to what you would do in a traditional squat, and you should instead inhale as you stand up and exhale as you descend down toward the floor. In addition to working all the major muscle groups, Hindu squats will give you an intense cardio workout. Matt Furey has claimed to have done 2,000 of these repetitions straight, while his mentor Karl Gotch completed 9,000 repetitions straight for a period of 4-1/2 hours, however it is recommended that you aim for a goal of completing 100 repetitions.

Hindu Pushups

A variation on the traditional pushup, Hindu pushups involve a motion that includes arching the back. The arching movement helps to bring the back and hips into the exercise in addition to the involvement of the arms and shoulders. To begin performing your first Hindu pushup you need to get your body into the traditional pushup position. However, in this case, you need to stick your butt up in the air and spread your legs far apart. During this exercise you will need to extend your arms straight forward in front of your body. Bend your elbows and lower your hips as you push through the position until your arms are in a straight position. You should be facing forward and your hips should be as close to the floor as possible throughout the exercise. Then, move back into the start position, while still keeping your arms straight. As with the Hindu squats, your Hindu pushups should be done in a very fluid motion.

This style of pushup is very similar to the dive bomber style of pushups, but with a very slight difference. With a dive bomber pushup, you would bend your arms on the way back into the starting position, while the Hindu pushup requires straight arms throughout. Dive bomber pushups give more of a workout to the arms, however they reduce the benefits that the Hindu pushups give to the back and shoulder regions.
