Should you hire a professional accountant?
A qualified professional accountant may know about a deduction or a credit that you would have passed over had you tried to do the taxes yourself. Often a good accountant will save you far more in the long run than you ever end up paying them in fees.
Save time
Professional accountants save you time as well as money
Where is the benefit in you spending countless hours going over your taxes, neglecting the very activities that bring income into the business. Very few small business owners have the time to sit down and plan ahead for the tax returns, it is far better to hand the reigns over to a qualified professional accountant who can have a plan put together well ahead of time.
Changing your accountant can be a real pain so try to be sure you are selecting the right person or company to do the job before jumping into a decision.
How to choose the right accountant for your business
A few pointers on selecting the right accountant for your business
- Location: It can make things a lot easier if the accountant you choose is pretty local to your location. You can discuss matters face to face and they can learn about your business much easier than if everything had to be done via phonecalls or email.
- Interested: Rather than simply punching numbers into a spreadsheet your accountant should be interested in your business and any future plans. They should be looking ahead and helping you plan for the future.
- Price: everybody wants to get the best deal, and this usually more prominent when it comes to owners of small businesses who are acutely aware of how much they can afford to have going out each month. But remember, pay a few pounds to your friend or relative, and you will get what you pay for. Shop around to get an idea of standard prices from a variety of professional accountants, but don't necessarily choose your accountant based solely on how they stack up price wise with their competitors.
- Personality: You want someone you get along with, and whom you trust. Meet with two or three of your top choices for a brief consultation and to discuss their services and fees. Then choose someone that you like and are comfortable working with. there is nothing worse than trying to work with someone who you just can't get along with.
- Qualified and experienced: It pays to make sure the accountant you choose is qualified to the correct levels in the fields appropriate to your business. Some experience in dealing with similar accounts would be advantageous too. Don't be afraid to ask for references, anybody with good working relationships with current customers should have no trouble supplying references for you.
According to recent statistics, there are currently over 270,000 qualified accountants in the United Kingdom alone. Additionally there are over 170,000 students in the UK studying to become accountants. The demand for qualified accountants in the United Kingdom is at an all time high, there are more students studying accounting than ever before.
A lot of people find an accountant through the recommendations of friends, co-workers and relatives. While such recommendations are always desirable, it is as important to know if that particular accountant is able or willing to tailor his or her services to meet your particular requirements. It is a good idea to talk to several different Financial Advisors and compare the financial plans that they are offering.

- Yeah thats a good point, whilst you may not have the time or the inclination to do your own accounts as a small business owner you certainly should have some knowledge of finance and accounting.

- Get an accountant, but get finance for non-finance majors books and understand them also. With your own business; you need to know where your money comes from, and where it goes.

- At what point would you recommend a business hires somebody to work full time within the company on accounts rather than outsourcing?
