Is Your Web Designer Doing it Wrong? How Do You Know?

A somewhat humorous look at what to watch out for!

You Hired the Wrong Web Designer When...

  1. You ask what the web designer's process is and are told, "Um... we like, make your website."
  2. You do a search on Google and can't find your business, and you realize far too late that your search optimization is screwed.
  3. You are shown a graphic and are told it will be "sliced into a table," in hushed, reverent tones.
  4. Your web designer doesn't know what a CMS is, or says "Oh, you don't want one of those! I'll make all the changes FOR you!" You call for a change and are charged out the wazoo. Web designer gets to your changes sometime in the next year.
  5. Your web designer doesn't have a blog but will create one for you (hint: he or she is learning on your dime). A web designer without a blog nowadays is like someone claiming to sell you the finest of cars while still driving a horse-and-buggy.
  6. Your web designer wants to give everything a bevel and a drop shadow. That was over with more than TWELVE YEARS AGO. Welcome to the 21st century.
  7. Your web designer is evasive about references.
  8. Your web designer doesn't know a thing about conversion, and in fact, never even asked you what the purpose of the website was or who the target audience was.
  9. There is little real text in your web pages, but lots of pictures with words in them. Blind people now send you death threats.
  10. A colleague of yours in another company asks you how your conversion rates are doing. You have no idea what he's talking about, so you ask your web designer. Your web designer has no idea what you're talking about.
