Overview of The Life and Work of Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Ando Hiroshige was born in Tokyo - which was then called Edo - in 1797. In 1809, when he was just 12 years old both his parents died. His father had been both a Samurai and a fireman.

In 1811, he joined the famous painting school and studio led by the ukiyo-e master Toyohiro Utagawa in 1811

His original name was Ando Tokutaro but in 1812 he was allowed to formally change his name to Utagawa and thereafter he called himself Utagawa Hiroshige. However in most ukiyo-e literature he is usually identified by the name Hiroshige Ando.

Making A Mark - posts which reference Hiroshige

In 2008 I developed a project about Japanese art on my blog 'Making A Mark' and these are the blog posts which are relevant to Hiroshige

Making a Mark: The influence of Japanese Art
There's something about Japanese Art which draws me in. I'm not sure quite what it is however I'm very sure that learning more about it will help me with the development of my own drawings and artwork. It had a significant impact on the artists who I studied last year so I feel that being open to its influence can only be beneficial.
Making a Mark: The concepts and characteristics of ukiyo-e
This week, I'm going to try and summarise what seem to be the subjects and characteristics of the Japanese wood block print - ukiyo-e.
Making a Mark: The elements of ukiyo-e
This post aims to provide an overview of the different elements of design used in a Japanese wood block print - ukiyo-e. For an explanation of the elements of design see this post - Composition - The Elements of Design
Making a Mark: Principles of design and composition and ukiyo-e
In my reading, I'm finding a lot of space devoted to narrating biography and history and describing images but very little which actually discusses images in terms of pictorial form and construction. the only book which has a detailed discussion is the Japonisme book which has a hefty section. However skim reading convinced me that the various devices highlighted and discussed almost need a post each.

I'm also trying to relate a Japanese way of making pictures to western concepts of what's important in terms of Principles of Design (as discussed in the last project) Again this is more about me finding a way to understand what's going on initially rather than saying the western way of looking at things is best. As we'll see as this project progresses, there's an awful lot of western art which adopted conventions which originated in the East.

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) holds an assured place in the history of art as one of the greatest masters of the wood-block print. This volume offers an excellent overview of the accomplished artist who, together with Hokusai, was the leading creator of landscape imagery in Japanese printmaking.

If Hokusai is recognized for his bold compositions and clearly defined forms, Hiroshige is the master of the passing moment - the artist of mist, snow, and rain. The immense popularity of Hiroshige's prints meant that they were continually reprinted, wearing down the woodblocks. For this book, every effort has been made to reproduce only the finest early impressions.

Each plate is provided with a commentary by Matthi Forrer who, in an introductory essay, examines Hiroshige's life and work, assessing his place in Japanese art and making important revisions to the generally accepted chronology of his oeuvre. Other essays draw attention to aspects of Hiroshige's life and work which have often been overlooked and place Hiroshige and his art in their social and political context. This volume also includes maps, a chronology, a glossary and a bibliography.
