Have a little role playing fantasy fun for your Halloween date! Are you a closet Maid Marian and Robin Hood? Harry and Ginny? Or are you two pirates sailing the high seas? Or is one of you an alien and the other an officer on board the Enterprise? How about cyber-sexy Neo and Trinity?
If you or your partner are a little shy about role playing or dressing up, don't worry - here are some tips to help you out, and some great costume ideas to choose from. Plus, some tips on how to get your partner to dress up too!
Go Wild!
Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley
Harry Potter nostalgia is the best act in town this Halloween, with the official launch of JK Rowling's Pottermore site happening around the same time.You will need glasses and a cloak for Harry, and a long red wig and cloak for Ginny. Don't forget your wands.

If you still have your Avatar costume from last year, you can adapt that as a Smurf costume this year by painting out the stripes, removing the tail, and adding a white smurf hat, blue smurf mittens, and white shoe covers. Smurfettes, add a bright yellow wig, if you like.

She was an immortal elf, he was a mortal human with a destiny to follow. Arwen and Aragorn's love was so tragically doomed... sigh.Or perhaps Legolas wins the fair lady's heart...

Tips for Tricking and Treating Your Partner into a Costume
Are you gazing longingly at a gorgeous set of costumes knowing that your partner wouldn't be seen dead or undead dressed up for Halloween? Try these ideas:
- If the party is at your place, or you're asked for input, suggest a colour themed party. This allows shy guests to dress within their comfort levels but still be part of the theme.
- Rather than coaxing your partner into a full costume, opt for just a mask or other add-ons. This can be handed to him (or her) just before entering the party when the realisation hits that everyone else is wearing something. Try Shrek ears, a Smurf mask or Batman mask, or get your partner to wear a red, blue, or mustard t-shirt and hand him a Star Trek communicator pin. Masks are particularly effective as they truly are something to hide behind.
- Pirate costumes are great. All he needs to wear is something really scruffy and slightly "vintage". He doesn't even have to shave!
- Or go for a military costume. Many guys feel quite cool in uniform. There are numerous options from police officer to civil war soldier, or you can even team a smart dress uniform with a princess ballgown a la Cinderella or Gone with the Wind.

How to role play a romantic fantasy
If you and your partner are a little shy, you may not know where to start without feeling silly. Here are some tips:
- It may feel weird to call each other by the names of the characters in the movie. Why not make up your own names? Neo and Trinity were hackers' screen names - you could use a login for a forum or chat room. Make a whole new persona, but make it one that you identify with.
- It can sometimes be easier if there's a whole group of you role playing (no, I'm not setting up an orgy here). Get some practice in an amateur acting group, and before long you and your partner will be practicing your lines in private.
- Make a (drinking) game of it. Write out some classic scenes on card (either from a romantic movie, or from literature). Take turns rolling dice to draw a card, and act out the scene together. To spice it up a bit, add "hazards" in between the scene cards, such as dares, stripping, or drink shots.
Neo and Trinity
It took them a while to get together, but Neo and Trinity were ultra-cool and super-sexy during the process. They both had to save each other's life several times (always good for upping the romance level). Make your date fun and special...
Surprise your partner. What better ways to add some sparkle than to:
- Secretly order costumes and be dressed in yours to surprise your partner. Set up the evening around the theme of your costumes, from the food to the music.
- Hire or buy a movie that is a particular favourite for your partner, or one they have been wanting to see. Set it up ready to play and leave a trail of clues leading to the TV.
- Rearrange the living room (or bedroom), either according to the costume theme you've chosen, or just romantically filled with candles, incense, soft music, and beautifully draped fabrics.
- Go overboard on flowers. You don't have to buy expensive roses either - plan ahead and dry the petals of cut flowers and even wild flowers. Pop into a florist's shop and ask if they will sell (or give) you their wilted, unsold stock. These dried and semi-dried petals still make an impressive sight sprinkled all over the sofa, carpet, and bed. You can write your lover's name in petals, too.
