Arlington National Cemetery - America's Most Hallowed Ground
Arlington National Cemetery - America's most hallowed ground
Arlington National Cemetery, resting place for more than 240,000 American military men and women and their dependents, is the most honored burial ground, consecrated by the famous and the everyman, with a history that links George Washington to Robert E. Lee to John F. Kennedy. The most famous burial at Arlington is unknown. The tomb of the Unknown Soldier includes the remains of unidentified soliders from World War I, World War II and the Korean War, and honors those fallen soldiers "known but to God." The precision and poignancy of the changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns is one of the most moving spectacles of the capital, and is carried out hourly or, in summer months, on the half hour. The real impact of Arlington is in its serenity. On its 612 acres of rolling hills are interred America's heroes, both famous and unsung, with the rows of headstones seemingly standing at attention, ever ready for duty. And when taking in the view of the city from Arlington House that so inpsired President Kennedy, one understands what they fought for. In honor of Master Gunnery Sergeant Darrell Boatman USMC killed in Iraq and his father, Master Sergeant Roy Boatman, Army Ranger Vietnam Veteran.

How To Behave In A Cemetery
Cemeteries are places of remembrance, so please be respectful!
Cemetery Etiquette1. Cemeteries are collections of privately owned outdoor sculpture. Please stay in the designated walkways, off cemetery lots and do not touch any memorials or artifacts.
2. Appreciate the memorials as they are. Do not add to, take away from, or modify a memorial in any way, even if you have exceptionally good taste. If it's not yours, don't touch it.
3. Show respect for the dead and for their surviving families and loved ones. Do not intrude on funeral or memorial services. Do not bring alcohol, firearms, or entertainment items into cemeteries. Always be considerate of others.
4. Well-behaved children under the direct supervision of responsible adults are welcome. Teach your children to respect cemeteries. Running, playing, and noisy activities are not appropriate in cemeteries.
5. Keep your pets under control on a leash away from cemetery memorials and artifacts. Clean up after your pets.
6. Enjoy the natural peace and serenity of the cemetery. Do not litter (this includes cigarette butts) and do not interfere with the plants and wildlife that inhabit the site.
7. Keep your vehicle on designated roadways or in parking areas. Idling vehicle engines can be harmful to historical structures. Please do not block cemetery roadways.
8. Know the rules and regulations and abide by them. Respectful group activities, tours, and special events must be registered in advance. Promptly report any suspicious activities to management.
Note about tombstone rubbings: most cemeteries prohibit this practice because of the damage it causes to the monuments. Please ask about the cemetery's policies, and get permission before making any rubbings.
The Old Granary Burial Grounds- Boston, Massachusetts
Along with Massachussetts Governors, Clergymen, and Mayors, three signers of the Declaration of Independence, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Robert Treat Paine, are buried here.
Approximately 5000 people are buried at Granary even though there are only 2300 headstones. Since funerals were expensive, there would be one headstone per family. Each grave contains at least 20 bodies.

My Encounter With The Black Angel
Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, Iowa

Everyone who lives in or around Iowa City or attended the University of Iowa knows about the Black Angel. Stories of death, murder, infidelity and mystery have surrounded her for nearly 100 years.
I first heard the Black Angel legends in 1986, just after I transfered to U of I. I was interested, of course, but lack of transportation kept me from visiting her until I went to the cemetery for a photo shoot with a local artist. I felt no fear when I saw her, only a sense of loss and sadness.
She was unusual in her stance, with her wings coming forward over her arms and her shrouded face. Her expression was very sad. She was looking down over a monument next to her, in the likeness of a tree stump. Its inscription, translated from Czech read:
"Like a bud just opening/commenced my life to be/but death came without mercy/without pity/The Lord had sent for me/I was not granted time to bid adieu/Do not weep for me dear brother/I am at peace in my cool grave."
Missing finger tips and half burnt candles at her feet told of vandals who had disturbed her vigil.
Well, the artist took the photos, and off we went, without incident. I researched her story, and discovered she was sculpted by Mario Joseph Korbel, a Bohemian artist.
The true history of the Black Angel has been known for some time. Even with all the facts that dispel the mysteries surrounding her, I'm still amazed at the stories people tell, and how they evolve. People will believe whatever they want, despite the truth.

- Perhaps not as a destination in itself (although a tour through several really interesting ones would be fun!), but another attraction to see along the way. Most places with a historic cemetery have a lot of local flavor anyway.
Thanks for stopping by! :)
