Old Downtown Brunswick

Many people do not realize how old the city of Brunswick, Georgia really is. It was the 500-acre site of The Hermitage Plantation built ca 1739, which was located on today's First Street overlooking the navigable river. It was the first plantation built outside of the protected Fort Frederica on St. Simon's Island. The owner was Colonel Mark Carr who lost everything when he was off on a scouting expedition (for Spanish) with General Oglethorpe and returned to discover his family hiding in a crib house. Spanish-Indians had burned the home. This area went unsafe for many years, and most of the settlements were inside the fort. Colonel Carr obtained fame fighting the Spanish with General Oglethorpe, helping drive them from Ft. Augustine and afterwards received extensive land grants for his service, especially in Liberty County which he later donated for the establishment of the port village of Sunbury.
