General Oglethorpe Brings Highlanders to Georgia to fight Spanish
General Oglethorpe needed the highlanders from Inverness, Scotland to help him fight a guerrilla-styled war against the Spanish. Soon after he settled a group in New Inverness, Georgia (later named Darien), England's war with Spain began (1742). So, Oglethorpe took his highlanders into Spanish Florida to wage a siege against Fort Augustine. The idea was to starve them out. However, the fort was so completely fortified, that the cannon balls did little but dent the walls. For months, they hailed cannon against the castle, which was laughable to the Spanish commander. General Oglethorpe became sick with fever and the regiment was forced to return to Fort Frederica on St. Simons's Island, Georgia.
The Scots settled on the site of the old Fort King George, an English fort manned for several years along the Frederica River about 1722.

Old Darien
Here is a plat of the old village of Darien, settled ca 1735 in today's McIntosh County. Although the records burned in the county (after all, the highlanders won the War with Spain for England in 1744), some survive.Darien Old City Cemetery
