Ventura Historical Houses

IMG_1022

Historical Houses. My first experience of a large number of historical houses was when I first visited San Francisco and saw the Victorian homes on a hill. Many had porches. What a delight to have a porch where you could rock and sip a drink in the summer time. I remember as a kid visiting one of my dad brothers in Washington. They lived in Seattle and had a big house with a porch. It made such an impression on me.

I love the house featured here (Mary Mitchell House). The center window reminds me of a chess piece. It is one of many historical homes left in Ventura which reminds of the pioneers who settled this country.

Olivas Adobe

Olivas Adobe 2

Olivas Adobe 1

The Olivas Adobe Historical Park is owned and operated by the City of Ventura. On the site is the Casa Grande, Great House, which is part of the extensive Rancho San Miguel property awarded to Raymundo Olivas as part of a Mexican Land Grant in 1842, by then Mexican Governor, Juan Bautista Alvarado. The site also has a smaller casa, built around 1865 that served many purposes and is presently part of a two million dollar retro-fitting and rehabilitation of both structures. The large house, built with adobe bricks, represents the Monterey Style so common with the wealthy during the California Rancho Period when the state was part of Mexico. The casa grande is furnished with period pieces and other decor representing the Victorian time frame.

Yes, thanks for visiting. I was recently in Philadelphia and you could walk down a street and see four or five different time periods in architecture. Give the age of the city, Philly kept building next to an older style of building....really gives a special flavor to the community.

Historical houses are always interesting to look at and become a part of our history. It's fascinating how historical architecture varies from one part of the country to another. For instance, you wouldn't find an adobe house in the NE. :) Enjoyed my tour here.
