History of the World by Avalon Hill : A new Civilization to play every turn
History of the World: Basic gameplay Concepts
Essential Concepts for History of the World by Avalon Hill
The game takes place in the historical time period that begins at the first civilizations and progresses up to just before the start of World War I.
Gameplay is broken down into 7 epochs (turns) in which each player plays an empire drawn from a pool of empires specific to that turn. The Arabians are played on a separate turn from the British Empire, for example.
Armies left over from previous turns remain on the map but can no longer be actively used by the player. Players still accrue victory points from units still in play.
Cards are dealt to the players at the beginning of the game (10). These 'event' cards can be played up to two per turn to give your current empire bonuses and boosts.
The player with the most victory points at the end of the game wins.

Some Strategies and Tips for History of the World:
- The person in the lead on the third turn of the game almost never wins. Because of the balancing effect of choosing empires, if you are way out in front early you will get stuck with the worst empires, putting you behind the 8 ball for the rest of the game.
- Only use forts when you can no longer use your armies to earn points. While the defensive bonus may seem tempting, playing a fort-heavy strategy will often leave you with too few victory points.
- Use Navigation to your advantage. If you can sail, gain presence in as many continents as possible before you begin attacking anyone.
- When choosing between similar empires pick the one farthest from your current armies. This will make it easier to avoid cannibalizing your soldiers and expand your point base.
