History of Timeshare

Ranked #42,869 in Travel & Places, #1,064,909 overall

Origin of Timeshare

The concept of Time-share originated in the Year 1960, in Europe, which entails a form of ownership or the right to use a property, most commonly condominium units, for a specific alloted time, which in turn is divided by different proprietors. The units may be taken on a lease basis or on a part-ownership usage. Moreover, this type of business has invited avid vacation goers to stop renting and start buying instead. It wasn't long before developers across the world bought the idea, most especially during the times when the resort industry has experienced a decline.

Timeshare owners may take advantage of their allotted usage time, rent it out, give it as a gift or even do an exchange within or outside his resort or resort group. They may also opt to sell it through advertising traditionally or through online.

Leading Timeshare Companies

Leading hotel and resort owners such as the Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, Westgate and Wyndham, embraced this profitable business as it has gained acceptance and fame to many vacation goers. This lodging concept was later on applied to occupancy schemes for boats, planes, cars among others.

The Point System

Later on, the point system was introduced which entitles timeshare owners to convert their usage time into points in exchange for plane tickets, hotel and tour packages, and even for a cruise, or tickets to amusement parks. However, there may be a limit to such options depending on the developer.

The Timeshare Industry

The timeshare industry, according to the American Resort Development Association International Foundation, recorded 1,604 timeshare resorts, having 154,439 in number at the United States in January 2006, experiencing an increase of 16% in Year 2007.

Though its global scope is not as readily measured, most of timeshare units at those times are found in North America, Latin America, and in Asia (specifically in Japan, Thailand, and India).

However, in the years that came, the timeshare industry have suffered different challenges, with special assessments, skyrocketing maintenance fees and taxes, challenges on timeshare selling, and emergence of other ways of going for a vacation, for a lesser price.
